Mangalore, Jan 15: A giant step has been taken by the Mandd Sobhann troupe to place Konkani in the Guinness Book of World Records, said Eric Ozario, head of Mandd Sobhann here on Tuesday January 15.

Addressing press persons he said that ‘Konkani Nirantari’ a singing marathon of 40 hours from 6 am on Saturday January 26 to 10 pm on Sunday January 27 will be organized by Mandd Sobhann. This will be an attempt to beat the existing record of 36 hours set on July 3 and July 4 2004 by a group ‘Communidade Evangelica Luterana Sao Paulo’ of Ulbra, Brazil.

At the Nirantari nearly 44 groups will be singing one after the other. More than 1500 singers will sing over 600 Konkani songs for 40 hours continuously. Singers from Mumbai, Goa, Bangalore and Mysore will also take part.

There will be a gap not exceeding 30 seconds between each song but if the interval goes beyond 30 seconds the record will not be set. ‘We have planed to maintain a 20-second gap between each song’ said Eric Ozario.

The programme will be inaugurated by bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza. Chief of Ryan’s International institutions Grace Pinto and NRI entrepreneur-philanthropist, Ronald Colaco of Bangalore, and managing director of Sri Krishna Dairy Pvt Ltd Pradeep G Pai will be the guests of honour while adjudicator of Guinness World Records, London Keith Pullin will be the special guest on this occasion.

President of Maand Sobhann Louis J Pinto, coordinator Stany Alvares, technical director of Konkani Nirantari Arun Raj Rodrigues, chief music director Joel Pereira and head of media committee Titus Noronha were present.
