Indian man walks 1,000 km to attend court hearings in Dubai

Dubai, Nov 29, (PTI) : A 48-year-old Indian man in Dubai, who has been living in a public park and has no money for even a bus ticket, has walked more than 1,000 kilometres over two years to attend court proceedings to obtain a flight ticket to return home.

Jagannathan Selvaraj, who hails from Tiruchirappalli, braved traffic, heat, sandstorms and exhaustion as he made his way through the busy highways of Dubai, travelling a distance of 22 kilometre one way from his Sonapur accommodation to attend the labour court proceedings.

A bus trip from Sonapur to Karama costs a few dirhams, but Selvaraj did not have money to travel by bus and was forced to spend two hours for a one-way trip and another two hours for the return journey after every court hearing.

In the four hours, he covered a distance of 54 kilometres and had to undertake that journey every couple of weeks until a verdict on his case was delivered.

"My case number was 826 and I had to walk 2 hours in the morning to reach the court in Dubai. I used to get up early morning at 4 am on the days the court was to hear my case. Every 15 days, I had to walk all the way to the court because I did not have the money to pay for bus or taxi," he said.

"Nobody helped me, but I must have attended the court at least 20 times during the two years. After every court hearing, I would hang around until evening to start the return trip. The walk was tough in summer but I did not have any other options. I wanted to escape from these problems," he told 'Khaleej Times'.

Selvaraj began his court journeys after his mother died back home in an accident and he was denied permission to go and attend her funeral.

His case went on for almost two years and Selvaraj recollects that he must have walked at least 20 times to Karama from Sonapur and back, every time covering a distance of 50-plus kilometres in four hours.

He has been living in a public park in Sonapur for several months and says he is sick and tired and just wants to return home, the report said.

"He wants a ticket to go home. All his friends who were living in the park have gone home. He cannot walk all the way to India, and needs just a plane ticket to go home," said a social worker who is trying to help Selvaraj.

The dubai Govt. Should not only give him flight tickets they should compensate him for his struggle over two year for 100 Dhirams for every kilometre he walked.

Such a Shame on a Govt that Boasts about development.

Definitely he has not approached the right person or he may not know, whom to contact.

If not mistaken, if he had contacted Tamil association of St. Mary's Church Dubai, they do help, irrespective of religion.

I am with this man,I understand his pain, and I am aware that there are too many good people around us who are willing to help.I dont know clearly his situation.
But many of us are poor due to our rituals and habits. We are poor due to our poor thought. We all need rich thoughts in order to see abundance in our life.

This is how the poor and the downtrodden have stood on the queues to get their livelihood from their old notes to new notes.

Bank staff have died and on the line queued people have died plus daily plight of the farmers who have committed suicide for crop loss due to untimely rain.

GOD SAVE THE POOR'S AND THE DOWNTRODDEN.

SOME HOW GOD WILL CHOOSE A GOOD SAMARITAN TO SELVARAJ'S CAUSE. MAY GOD BLESS HIM TO RETURN BACK TO HIS HOME LAND.

    yeah ram...
jiska koi nahi uska khudh hotha hai..proved wrong.
When people have money all will revolve around..if do not have nothing no body turn around.
It applies not only in india all around.
Sometimes we feel proud when we see billionaries in our midst but of no use while looking such incidents.
What associations are doing actually..?? Cannot take care of a person and only good in honouring celebrities all the time.
Why not take such case all the time.
I felt very bad about selvaraj.
Now only can inform god provide him energy and strength all the day while proceedings going on.
God bless him and reach home soon.
    Thanks daiji highlight the same.
When we cannot help one another..how can stay on this earth.
