Belagavi, Dec 14: In a tragic incident which happened in Nayanagar village in Indi taluk of the district on the night of Monday December 12, a person fired at and killed his son, who happened to be a soldier of the Indian Army. In this incident, Vittal's second wife and a daughter were also injured.
It is reported that Vittal Indi (68), resident of Nayanagar, asked for money from his son, Eranna Vittal Indi (21), who was in the army. Eranna was under training at Madras Engineering Group training centre of Indian Army at Bengaluru since the last six weeks. He had visited his family during holiday on Monday but that proved to be his undoing. Eranna's father, who was fully drunk, had sought Rs 50,000 from his son and other family members to buy a motor bike. After Eranna refused to oblige, there was exchange of heated words between the son and father. At the end, Vittal Indi fired six rounds at his son, wife and daughter from his revolver.
Vittal Indi had earlier worked for the armed forces but later obtained voluntary retirement. He was working as local postmaster thereafter, and had retired eight years back. He stayed at Ingali village in Vijayapura district, and now and then visited his wife, Anasuya (38), and daughters, Preeti and Pooja living at Nayanagar. He knew that the family had saved some money for conducting marriage of one of the daughters, and sought a share out of that money for buying a two-wheeler. He had come to Nayanagar on Monday evening after coming to know that his soldier son had come on holiday. When the family members refused to give in to his demand for money, Vittal drew his double barrel gun and fired six bullets at three persons, Eranna, Anasuya, and Preeti.
While the soldier, who received bullet injury to his head, died on the spot, his mother, Anasuya, and sister, Preethi, suffered grave injuries in the firing. Both of them are being treated in the district hospital at Belagavi. After the three collapsed to the ground, Vittal fled from the scene.
Funeral of Eranna was conducted the same night. Police said they are looking for Vittal Indi, who is absconding.
