Mangalore, Jan 26: The city was all set to play host Mandd Sobhann’s Konkani Nirantari, an attempt to enter Guinness Book of World Records with a 40-hour-long non-stop singing marathon.  However the city did not wake up to hear good news on country’s Republic Day on Saturday January 26.  What can one call this day?  On one hand Konkani Nirantari, an attempt to take Konkani to Guinness Book of World Records began at Kalaangann, bringing good tidings to lacs of Konkani-speaking people spread across the globe, but on the other hand, the Catholic community in particular and entire district at large lost one of its most respected political leaders Blasius D’Souza fondly known as Blazy.

But much before this, while the entire city was still in deep slumber, residents of Beeri of Kotekar near Ullal woke up to a rude shock as 8 persons traveling in a Maruti Omni were killed in a ghastly accident.

The accident occurred when a Maruti Omni carrying 11 people rammed into an electrical pole at Beeri resulting in the instant death of 8 persons and seriously injuring two while one escaped with minor bruises. As soon as the vehicle hit against the electricity pole, live-wire passing through the pole fell on the vehicle, electrocuting 8 persons who were travelling.  The vehicle has been charred in the tragedy.

The deceased have been identified as Sanjay, Rajeev, Pramood, Pakku, Sudheer, and Rabi.  Identity of other victims is yet to be established.  The ctically injured have been identified as Munna and Sathendra while Arjun has sustained some bruises.

They were on their way back after completing concreting work in the city. All of them hailed from Bihar and were in the city for the last few months.
