Meet a senior participant of Nirantari

Daijiworld Media Network - [VM]
With Inputs from Vinaya Joseph

Rev Dr John Fernandes, 71, of Shanti Kiran, Bajjodi is one among the senior participats at Nirantari. He is a member of the team of priests.

He says: “ It is not only about preserving the language or culture of a community but their folklores, which expresses their joys and sorrows.”

He says: “I am confident we are going to break the record. The arrangement has been so good. Lot of meticulous preparation has gone into it. Breaking the record is not the sole aim but this event also brings people together and that’s worth it.”
He says: “Our language is being threatened by the globalized powerful American English. Our children have to relate to the language.

“Inspite of the pressure of one monoculture, which is coming on us, we have to preserve our own culture and enrich the multiplicity and richness of the world heritage.”

He says, “I feel it is important to put Konkani language on a world footing. Not to glorify but to make an example that a small group of people can add up to the world culture. It is something enriching and positive.

“But when Eric spoke about the Guinness Record plan, I was skeptical. Are we aiming to become famous or are we aiming to support the culture? But the fact so many Konkani speaking people and their families from allover India came together made it a great idea. The idea that their mother tongue is important and recognized is something which is good.”

The siniging by the Goan team brought a change in the mood of the audience. The songs were found new to a Mangalorean crowd.

There was no live cable TV coverage for Nirantati in Bantwal. V4 Media, the prime channel in M'lore lead by Mangalorean, could have made arrangements for coverage of this Life time achievement. I hope at least the recorded program might be aired soon.

We missed Nirantari coverage live on TV here (in Karkala) I wish cable network could have covered this programme for DK & Udupi Dist viewers.
