Mangaluru, Dec 25: Under the recently introduced 'Mukhyamantri Santwana - 'Harish' scheme' of the state government, people suffering injuries anywhere in the state due to road accidents are provided with trauma care for a period of 48 hours subject to maximum limit of Rs 25,000 free of cost. This scheme has been in operation since March 8 this year, and is implemented by Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust, a concern functioning under health and family welfare department.
As per the survey on road accidents for the year 2016, Karnataka stands third in the number of accidents and deaths therein in the country. In view of this situation, the above scheme was launched. The scheme is a public welfare scheme and therefore participation by the general public is of supreme importance for its success. Without active participation by the people, this scheme cannot be successful.
Understanding the need to honour those who come forward to provide emergency treatment and help to save lives of accident victims, and as a measure to encourage and inspire them to get involved with such activities, the government has introduced 'Jeevarakshaka (life saver)' awards to such people. The main aim of instituting this award is to encourage people on the spot to immediately come forward to save lives of people suffering due to road accidents by transporting them to hospitals and ensuring that they get prompt treatments. People who on their own come forward to help the people injured in road accidents without the lure of prizes, gain or benefits and thereby show kindness and quality of altruism are eligible for this award.
Eligibility: Person of any origin who works to help accident victim within the state of Karnataka irrespective his or her nationality can nominate himself or get nominated by others for this award.
Method of selection: District level Jeevarakshaka Samithi scrutinizes nominations or applications received for this award, and based on the level of assistance and good result arising out of such gesture, people are chosen for first, second, and third prizes. While the first prizes are awarded at Bengaluru, the remaining awards are conferred in the respective districts. Nominations/applications will be received between January and July and again between August and December. Awards will be handed over during Independence Day celebration on August 15 and Republic Day programme on January 26 every year. The awards comprise certificate and citation, which will be handed over to winners.
Applications/nominations are invited from eligible people from Dakshina Kannada district for this award. December 31 will be the last date for receipt of applications for the award. For more information and application forms, district coordinator, Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust, district health and family welfare department in the city (Ph: 7259003406) may be contacted, said district health and family welfare officer through a release.
