Mangalore, Jan 27: “Culture means intellectual development. Culture resides in attitude, driven in a right direction. Religion, media and work culture are determining factors. Parental monitor is a contributing factor,” said Ananthakrishna, chairman of Karnataka Bank.

He was addressing the gathering at the ‘Mangalore Today - Conclave ‘08’, a felicitation ceremony of George Fernandes, former defence minister, which was held at Karnataka Bank Auditorium at Kodialbail, here on Sunday, January 27 evening.

Gifting a well nurtured culture largely depends on making youth realize that freedom is not limitless and it’s also important that parents should understand youth and their aspirations.  Change in mindsets and attitude may help one in the long run to cultivate a culture among youngsters, this is the era where youngsters are paid whooping salaries, “if it is spent in a right way, no problem, if not, then the problem arises,” hence advising youth is highly essential,  he added.

Limiting role models to celluloid celebrities is concentrated phenomenon which would not be healthy for the society, he opined.

MV Kamath, chairman of Prasar Bharathi, felicitated the former defence minister, George Fernandes with ‘Lifetime Achievement Award – ‘08’.

George Fernandes while acknowledging the felicitations, poured out his empathy to the likely displaced families who would become the victims of land acquisition for setting up mega projects like Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the undivided district of Dakshina Kannada (DK), thereby urged the concerned authorities to make them stakeholders, in order to secure their future.  Moreover, he advocated not allowing such projects which threaten the eco-sensitive environment of DK.

MV Kamath delivered the felicitation address. N Vinay Hegde, chairman of Nitte Education Trust, presided over the programme.

Austin Tauro, ex-chairman of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Sudhir P Ghate, chairman of Magnum Intergrafiks Private Limited, UV George, publisher and editor of ‘Mangalore Today’ and others were present on the occasion.

It is a great day for Mr. George Fernandes, in his own city, he was honoured for his services at last... He is a true leader of India and especially Mangalore. His speeches are like dynamite, during 1977 Chikmagalur by elections against late Indira Gandhi we used to go with him just to hear his mesmarising speeches. I wish him good health and I am really proud of Mr. GF

It is a long overdue honour to the former Defence Minister from his hometown. His persona and achievements through personal sacrifice, particularly the travails of the Emergency are awesome and inspirational. His contributions to nation building in general and his home region in particular make one proud to claim him as a son our own soil.

Mangalore Today has done well to remember him over the reigning icons of current politics. The function of Mangalore Today, which I attended was a worthy evocation of values in public life.
