Mangalore, Jan 31: Mangalroeans are in for a gala time with the beach festival all set to begin on Friday February 1 at Panambur as part of the ongoing Karavali Utsav.
Addressing media persons here on Wednesday January 30, deputy commissioner Maheshwar Rao informed that there will also be a food festival during the three-day event. There will be a variety of events for children and adults including swimming, boat race, skating, kite flying, volleyball, photography and dance competitions, he said.
On the first day of the event there will be kite show by Team Mangalore followed by a dance competition in which selected teams will participate. Cash awards of Rs 25,000, Rs 20,000 and Rs 15,000 will be presented to the top three winners respectively.
A spiritual programme 'Satsang' will be organized by the city's Art of Living team at 4.30 pm on February 2. On the same day there will also be boat race and swimming competitions along with a kite show. Cultural programmes by Tulu, Konkani and Beary artistes will be the centre of attention in the evening.
The concluding day of the festival on February 3 will showcase a music concert 'Udayaraga' at 4.30 by aritistes Srikant Marathe, Subrahmanya Dhareshwar, Sheela Diwakar, Muralidhara Udupi, Ramadas and Mahalaxmi Shenoy.
Other events to be held on the same day are skating competition for children, a sand sculpture competition, throwball and volleyball competitions and a kite show.
In the photography competition, only photographs taken of the three-day event will be allowed. The competition will be open to all and cash awards of Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000 will be given to the top two winners respectively. All the entries for the competition will be exhibited later.
For the convenience of the citizens, free bus transport facility has been arranged from Suratkal and Lalbagh to the beach on February 2 and 3. A total of 20 buses will ply to and fro the beach twice a day.
The valedictory will be held on February 3 at 6 pm, to be presided over by NMPT chairman P Tamilvanan. ZP president Sucharita Shetty, MP Sadanand Gowda, Udupi MP Manorama Madhwaraj, Chikmaglur MP D C Srikantappa, MLCs Capt Ganesh Karnik and Shobha Karandlaje will be the chief guests.
