Mangalore, Jan 31: On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's 60th death anniversary a programme entitled 'Remembering the Mahatma' was organized by the Gandhi Peace Foundation here, at Tagore Park on Wednesday January 30. The foundation also observed the day as ‘Day of Fraternity’.
In his speech N Vinaya Hegde, president of the Nitte Education Trust (NET) succintly declared “No one, as much as Mahatma Gandhi deserved the title ‘Mahatma.’
According to Hegde, Gandhi had dedicated his life and whatever he possessed to the nation. He opined that Gandhi was the first person in history to make use of non-violent means of protest. Further, he revealed that the partition of the nation hurt him very badly and that was the reason why he did not celebrate the Indian Independence.
Mohammed Kunhi, director of Shanthi Prakashana another speaker blaming the honest citizens of the country said that the "reason for the deterioration of society is the silence of good people."
Kunhi in this context exhorted the youth of the country to be bold enough to support who ever is right, irrespective of their religion. Moreover he urged the general public to have an open debate on religion as he felt that it was not a crime and added "only proper understanding of religion can stop the communal feelings in the society.”
There cannot be world peace without peace among religions pointed out Fr Alwyn Serrao, prinipal of Rosario college.
However, people do not understand it, that is the root cause of lack of peace in the world, he declared. And admiringly stated that it was only Mahatma Gandhi who truly understood it.
Gandhi Peace Foundation president Purushotham Shetty, honourary president Octavia Albuquerque, secretary Dr Ismail and others were present. On the occasion students of the Government DEd college presented various programmes.
