Mangalore, Feb 1: The civic authorities demolished petty shops located at Kadri Mallikatta here on Thursday January 31. Though the shopkeepers had been served notices well in advance, only some had vacated while many did not do so.

The demolition drive was led by assistant revenue officer Praveenchandra Karkera.

Shops which had been illegally set up on the roadside were razed to the ground with earthmovers. Many of the shopkeepers had even taken electricity and telephone connections. The officials took the help of MESCOM to disconnect the power lines.

According to reports, both BSNL and MESCOM have been asked not to provide connections to illegal petty shops.

A cobbler was allowed to retain his shop as he had obtained necessary permission from the authorities.

When the demolition drive began, many of the affected shopkeepers stood defiant for some time but seeing that the officials would not budge, they cleared off with their belonging at the last minute.

Well, Mallikatta had its own share of illegal petty shops. I lived in kadri and I know it only too well. The sudden spurt in innumerable petty shops occured when the bus stands started springing up. The authorities turned a blind eye in the beginning, which led to more and more petty shops popping up. some of the petty shops converted into fast food shops, were doing brisk business during the night, especially catering to students, even supporting their consumption of alcohol in return for ordering food.

One could notice these activities every evening. the Corporation authorities have finally woken up to the woes of the public or may be their own woes. How far and how long this drive for uprooting these petty shops shall remain in force is upto the citizens of managalore to watch and see. Can any one of these authorities vouch that none shall appear again. Or is it a way of smoking the eyes of the tax payer or is it in real interest of the citizens at large!

The Demolition Drive reminds me of the Sealing Drive here in Delhi. While I do not condemn the act of authorities maintaining city dwelling regulations, my sympathy goes with the victims of this act. I see crushed survival means in the pictures rather than entrepreneurial misadventures.

It is not that MESCOM does not check if the construction is legal or illegal - but believe me- if it is legal chances of getting MESCOM connection immediately are rare. To cite one live case, in 1986 in Mysore the MUDA formed a layout at Hebbal under Ashamandir Scheme which was perfectly legal. There was a high tension line (33 KV) running only on one site at the border of the lay out having more than 700 houses.

The KEB in charge at V.V.Mohalla under whose jurisdiction refused to give electricity to the entire area for 5 years citing the High Tension line !!!( which affected only one site on the border). In contrast in other parts of Mysore illegal constructions situated near and under such lines had got electricity. Then the whole area residents staged violent protests to get the connections - which was their legitimate right- and got it after 5 years!!!

An official by the same name who was there in KEB, Mysore then occupies a prominent post in MESCOM now. I do not know if he is the same nor I am inclined to know. Nevertheless the incident left a bad taste in the society of law abiding citizens.

Really Funny! The illegal petty shops had obtained electric and telephone connections! So its evident that the authorities in MESCOM & BSNL have not even verified the legal formalities. Where the MESCOM & BSNL authorities sleeping? or "angoota choos rahe the". Disgusting!

Let the government also take initiatives to help these petty shopkeepers some means to earn and live. This is a never ending story. After a few days you will again see these shops mushrooming, may be not in the same location, but somewhere else.

Terrorists obtaining sim cards illegally is no wonder when illegal shops right in the heart of the city can obtain electricity and telephone connections! ) & people with genuine documentation are made to run around and kept waiting for these services. What a waste!
