Mangalore, Feb 2: Officials of Pilikula Nisargadhama recently rescued two 15-day-old offspring of flying squirrel, a dwindling species of Western Ghats, which were found abandoned in a dense forest at Sampaje, en route Sullia to Madikeri.
Meanwhile, Pilikula Nisargadhama also received new guests in the form of four tiny myna birds which are found in plenty in Thekkady in Kerala. The birds were assigned to the care of Pilikula by Divakar Hegde, ex-mayor of the city. These birds along with the fragile baby flying squirrels are nursed by zoo assistants. The animals will be displayed for public viewing by the end of February.
There are many varieties of myna birds, among which tropical and desert types are generally spotted across the country.
Wildlife enthusiasts in the city will have the golden opportunity of watching the growing flying squirrels, a rare species of Western Ghats in their homeland.
It will be a real treat for those who get a chance to view the rare flying squirrel, said Jayaprakash Bhandary, deputy conservator of Pilikula Nisargadhama.
