Mangalore, Feb 7: Though several reforms and bills have been passed for improving the condition of dalits and marginalized sections of the society post-Independence, a lot still needs to be done as these reforms have benefited only a small percent of the backward population, said ICHR member secretary Dr Chinna Rao.
He was speaking at the two-day workshop on ‘Concepts, Context and Theories of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy’ organized by the centre for study of social exclusion and inclusive policy of Mangalore University here on Wednesday February 6.
He said that majority of the people in the countryside still suffer from exclusion in public and private life being illiterate and poor. It is now that the education sector has turned its attention to this subject of social exclusion.
Chinna Rao said that the nature of exclusion revolving around the caste system particularly needs to be understood and conceptualized. It is necessary to explore the societal inter-relations and institutions which are the cause of exclusion of certain groups from civil, cultural, political and economic spheres, he added.
University vice-chancellor Prof K M Kaveriappa presided over the programme. Centre director Prof Vishwanath and university registrar Dr Sundar Naik were present.
