What sets Narendra Modi apart from other leaders is his keen understanding and openness to using technology. Now India has embraced use of technology in delivery of public services and subsidies are transferred directly to bank accounts. So far, Rs 1.5 lakh crore has been directly sent to about 32 crore beneficiaries.
The poor of India have been empowered to send and receive payments without the use of even mobile phones. These are just a couple of the many technology interventions PM Modi has championed.
Narendra Modi's pioneering use of social media is a subject for many future case studies. He has not only changed the communication approach for Governments and Leaders, but also heralded an era where leaders are reaching out directly to people. His crisp 140 character tweets help people get direct information, while separating the wheat from the chaff.
He has also led many innovative campaigns like #Sandesh2Soldiers, #MyCleanIndia, #IncredibleIndia, #SelfieWithDaughter, etc which have won hearts nationally and internationally. His Mobile App, which has close to 10 million downloads, is also the most widely used app for a political figure. The app consists of gamification features where people can contribute in many ways and earn points.
PM regularly invites suggestions for various issues through his App and the top contributors in the App get to meet PM Modi.
In previous Governments, where correspondence of PM & PMO with citizens happened primarily through emails, thousands of mails often piled up and there was no tracking or ticketing mechanism either. Now, there is a dedicated grievance redressal section in PMO's website and grievances can be ticketed for various departments and tracked.
There are numerous examples of corrective action being taken after people have written to PM Modi. PM Modi himself personally keeps a tab on grievance redressal and systemic issues are taken up by him personally in every month's PRAGATI session. PM interacts with chief secretaries of states and senior officials of Centre Govt through technology in thePRAGATI session to find a solution to various issues.
People can also contribute with ideas and suggestions on policies and other issues on MyGov.in. The portal currently has close to 4 million members and is a global model in citizen engagement.
True to the 360 degree communication approach that PM Modi employs, PMO also does an outreach campaign through mailers via the SAMPARK platform. Weekly news of the Govt's initiatives are sent out to close to 1.7 crore subscribers.
The database is also categorized in multiple ways, to target users according to their profession & area of interest. For eg bankers get financial information and teachers sent out mailers of educational initiatives. People can register for these mails on the SAMPARKplatform and also unsubscribe at any point of time.
