Udupi, Feb 10: We are proud that India ranks second largest country in population. When we speak about the medals in Olympics, one has to bow down ones head. Yes, we are highest in population; but lowest in medals. The whole country blames sportspersons when they fail in Olympics. But, the question remains unanswered, whether the government has fulfilled its responsibility in selecting and promoting the talents in sports field.
The case of Mamata Salian, who has been selected for the national throw ball team to represent the country in the Asian championship which would be held in the coming month, is also the same. She has such a potential that she can prove herself a gem for the country. Owing to the lack of support, she already lost many opportunities in the throw ball field.
She developed interest in throw ball when she was studying in class VII, who has never looked back since then. She was the key player in every game which she represented at the local women associations’ throw ball team. Hailing from a fishermen community in a small village called ‘Tenka Edapadavu’ in Udupi district; her achievement is an ideal path for the youth who want to achieve significant in sports.
Like all other rural residents, she also did her primary and high school at Yermal and finished pre-university education at Adamar. Later, she pursued physical education training at Alva’s College of Physical Education in Moodbidri and completed during 1998. So far, she has played in seven national competitions. She had a chance to represent national team in 2002 at the international tourney, which was held in Japan. But, she could not make it, owing to no support from the government. Mamata Salian continued her service as a national player and a physical education teacher at Sri Poornaprajna Education Centre in Bhadravati. Meanwhile, she served in many prestigious competitions as a referee.
This time, the opportunity has once again opened-up on her part. However, she has to bear thorny path on her way to attend the Asian championship which will be held in Singapore shortly. So far she has not received any financial aid from the government. Meanwhile, her financial background is not strong as she is hailing from a middle class family. Although, she can certainly make it with the support of thousands of sports lovers, who wish to support her in bringing laurels to our country. Moreover, she is the proud daughter of coastal Karnataka. Those who wish to contribute for her future endeavour, please send your demand drafts/cheques to:
