Kundapur: Boating in the Backwaters of Kodi - A New Pastime for Kids

Kundapur, Feb 12: Under the joint auspices of Udupi district administration and the district forest office, boating, a new pastime for the kids was inaugurated by Kodi banks on Monday February 11.

Several private elementary school children of the Udupi district took part in the event. They  enjoyed the enchanting backwaters with mangroves forests of Kodi near Vittalwadi in the neighbourhood of municipality.

Among the officials present during the event were forest officer Hemalatha, Abhijit Dasgupta, chief secretary, forest, environment, flora and fauna department, M H A Sheikh and Anil Kumar Varma, chief conservators of forests, Raja Kumar Srivatsav, assistant conservator and Kishor Kumar, regional forest ranger.

However, it was observed at the end that the local schools were not invited and the media people were also kept in the dark. The whole programme looked pre-arranged and stage-managed.

    Kenneth is absolutely right. In Udupi & Mangalore dist we have plenty of Scenic Backwater, which are same as in Kerala. Only thing our authorities are lazy to keep in proper as most of back water filled by sand and created small islands.

    Agree with Raj that this is dangerous without proper safety equipment. Life jackets is a minimum. Please Daijworld convey this urgent concern to the authorities. It's a beautiful place though and I wish proper facilites with the minimum standards atleast are set-up and the place becomes popular.

    Yes I totally agree with Mr. Raj. There is hardly any safety for the children taking the boat ride. Some precautions should ne taken before starting such events. Sunitha

    Where is the safety standards for the kids. Absolute ridiculous. In the picture I cannot see any life jackets for the school kids. Its scary. Can someone please ban this so that we could save precious young lives.

    We have such lovely backwaters in our pretty Mangalore vicinity & the world is only talking about & flocking to the backwaters in "Gods own Country - Kerala". I think the authorities should start promoting Mangalore as a tourist destination with pristine beaches & unexploited backwaters.
