Mangalore: Annual Car Festival Begins at Sri Venkataramana Temple

Mangalore, Feb 13: The annual car festival of historical Sri Venkataramana Temple located at Car Street, began on Wednesday February 13 evening.

Thousands of devotees gathered at Car Street to pull the chariot of Lord Venkataramana in the evening. The chariot of God will be ceremoniously pulled along Lower Car Street and will later return. The idol of Lord Venkataramana will be taken on procession around the sanctorum after placing it in the golden palanquin. 

Earlier to this, various religious rituals were held at the temple. The idol of temple deity, Sri Venkataramana was anointed with choicest of ghee, turmeric powder, milk in the morning.  Thanksgiving offerings were held at ‘Yajna Mantap.’ 

The colourful ‘Holi Utsav’ will be held on Thursday February 14 morning, after Vasant Puja, as part of car festival. The idol will be taken round in ceremonious procession around the city before immersed at a lake, located near Srinivas School. The car festival will conclude after placing the idol of temple deity in the sanctum sanctorum.
