Trump fires chief lawyer for opposing travel ban, replaces Immigration official

Washington, Jan 31 (IANS): Amid protests against his order to temporarily ban people from seven Muslim-majority countries coming to the US, President Donald Trump fired a defiant Acting Attorney General Sally Yates for refusing to defend the order against court challenges.

Announcing the dismissal of the nation's top law officer on Monday night, the White House accused her of betrayal "by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the US."

Yates said earlier that she was not convinced of the legality of Trump's executive order temporarily refusing entry for people from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

Refusing to defend the challenges to the orders in court, she said: "I am responsible for ensuring that the positions we take in court remain consistent with this institution's solemn obligation to always seek justice and stand for what is right."

Trump appointed Dana Boente, the federal prosecutor for the Eastern District of Virginia, to take over Yates' position.

The first major legal challenge to Trump's order was filed by Bob Ferguson, the Attorney General of Washington, in a federal court there. The constitutional guarantees of religious freedom and equal rights were violated by the orders, he asserted.

The seven countries had already been identified as high-risk for terrorism by former President Barack Obama's administration. Trump's executive order bans their citizens from entering the US for 90 days till an extreme vetting process is put in place for them.

Although there have been widespread protests against the ban -- which critics say is anti-Muslim because the seven nations are Muslim majority -- a Rasmussen opinion poll showed that 56 per cent of likely voters supported the ban and only 33 per cent were against it.

Yates was appointed as the Deputy Attorney General by former President Barack Obama.

When Trump took over, Attorney General Loretta Lynch resigned and Yates was designated to be the acting appointee till Trump's nominee, Jeff Sessions, got Senate approval.

Democrats who oppose his nomination because of his conservative positions will now redouble their campaign against him, leading more delays in the confirmation process.

Trump replaces acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement

US President Donald Trump has replaced the acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), just hours after sacking acting Attorney General Sally Yates, who had refused to defend his controversial ban on immigrants and refugees in court.

Trump appointed Thomas Homan as the new acting director of ICE, replacing Daniel Ragsdale, Efe news reported.

Since 2013, Homan has been the executive associate director of ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), according to a statement issued by the Department of Homeland Security.

In the statement, the DHS did not specify the reasons for the replacement.

Ragsdale has been at the helm of the ICE since June 2012, when former President Barack Obama put him in charge.

Trump recently announced the recruitment of 10,000 new agents for ICE, an agency that currently has about 20,000 personnel, 6,000 of whom are dedicated to deportations.

All plus points can also negative effects as well, boon for some, bane for some.
One of the executive order of his presidency is 5 years banning all lower category government officials taking up lobbying jobs for companies American or otherwise where as permanent ban for Government officials having Executive powers.
which reminds that it was George Bush and Dick Chenney who had oil interests, and still having lobbying part, in going to war in Iraq for personal gains.

I say it again- DT isn''t doing anything that he didn''t say during campaign. He is obliged to fulfill them. He is an elected president. he has been elected on a promise that 'terror supporting country' immigrants will be controlled. He will protect US citizens. Now nobody has a right to question his decisions .US attorney general need to have resigned if she didn't want to follow boss order. Defying white house is direct breach on democracy elected institutions and insult of presidency .

Trump means business. Although it is a very harsh policy, the credibility of the USA as a secular nation is in question. Unpredictable future for fellow Indians aspiring to study and work in America.
