M'lore: Awareness Programme on Nuclear Energy Safety at FMMC

Mangalore, Feb 14: The department of atomic energy from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai along with the Indian Association of Radiation Protection (IARP) organized a short awareness programme on 'Radiation and Nuclear Energy Safety' for the students of Father Muller Medical College (FMMC).

A press release stated that the resource persons comprised Dr Abani, member of the IARP,  A H Khan, member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Dr Suresh Rao of BARC and Dr P M Ravi, head of the department of environmental radiation surveillance laboratory.

Fr Denis D’Sa, administrator, FMMCH welcomed the gathering while Prof Madhyastha, research and development cell coordinator, FMMC delivered the introductory address. The student assembly encompassed the medical and paramedical students, nursing students, homeopathic students and even the pupils of hospital administration. 

The programme highlighted the facts and myths about radiation and nuclear energy. It also shed light on the basics of nuclear radiation, the different types of radiation and its effects and hazards. In addition the programme discussed nuclear energy and its need, ways of production of nuclear power and the application of radioactive isotope elements in the fields of health care, agriculture, food processing, industry etc. Along with this, it also informed the audience on ways and means to protect oneself from radiation and nuclear energy.

The programme was aimed at improving awareness among the general public in the knowledge of radiation and nuclear energy and rectifying the doubts in the minds of professionals about the general misconceptions in these areas, the release stated.
