Mangalore: Notorious Inter-state Thieves under Police Net

Mangalore, Feb 14: City cops succeeded in nabbing two inter-state thieves who committed theft at a house located at Porkody, near Bajpe here after they escaped from Ankola prison in Uttara Kannada.  

The police arrested Shankar alias Shankarappa and Shankar alias Umesh, residents of Andhra Pradesh, on Wednesday February 13 and recovered stolen jewellery worth Rs 2 lac.

These two notorious inter-state thieves had been imprisoned at Ankola jail before they escaped from there to commit theft at Shankaranarayana, Kundapur, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar, Sirsi, Thirthahalli, Karwar, Sagar and Goa. Cases have been registered against them in most of these towns.  

The duo had committed theft on February 4, 2007 at the household of Chandrashekar Shetty and Pushparaj Shetty, located at Porkody, near Bajpe and decamped with gold jewellery.  They had stolen  valuables including gold jewellery from the house, when the family members had gone to attend the funeral rites of their relative.  Accordingly, Bajpe police had arrested Manikanta alias Mani and Venkatesh alias Venka, on February 6, 2007.  The policemen had recovered CD player and other items from them.  

On interrogation of Manikanta and Venkatesh, they revealed the involvement of Shankarappa and Umesh in the theft at Porkody.  Kavoor police who were on the look out for the duo managed to nab them at Marakada. 

The accused Shankar went about his business using several nick names such as Shankarappa, Suryashankara, Shivashankar and Nagaraja in order to hide his true identity.
