Mangalore, Feb 15: The coastal city, Mangalore will soon have a shipyard near Tannirbhavi in Old Mangalore Port area, if everything goes as planned.

The expert committee on Infrastructure Development and Miscellaneous Projects of the Ministry of Environment and Forests would recommend the Union Government for another mega project in Mangalore under the Special Economic Zone.

It is learnt that the meeting of the expert committee held in Mumbai recently has decided to recommend for a Rs 95 crore ship building yard near Tannirbhavi, Old Mangalore Port area in Mangalore by Bharti Shipyard Limited.

The project involves development of a ship building yard at Gurupur river estuary (Old Mangalore Port area) on a land that is near to Tannirbhavi village in Bolur Gram Panchayat. The site is located at Kudroli West, about 7.5 kilometres south of Mangalore Port.

The activities include construction phase, dredging, reclamation, solid waste, steel tailings, paint washing and effluent, launching of ships, ship running aground and oil spill.

The shipyard which will be developed in two phases requires 90 acres of land. The onshore shipyard facilities will be developed in an existing 28.3 acres of land belonging to the Mangalore Port.

Nearly 53 acres of area need to be reclaimed for the project. The water requirement of the project would be around 2,00,000 litres per day.

K Venugopal Shetty of Bharti Shipyard Limited told this website’s newspaper that 50 per cent of the process of acquisition of land had already over.

Remaining acquisition and project work would be done gradually, he said and added that the opposition from the fishermen in the region had been settled amicably.

Shipbuilding docks, outfitting jetties, wet basin, slipway, ship lift and other associated infrastructure will also be developed as part of the project.

Conditions

The expert committee has agreed to recommend the project in the meeting under Coastal Regulation Zone Notification, 1991 subject to the following conditions.

  • Brackish water flow to the Mangroves to be maintained
  • 50 m buffer to be provided around the mangroves
  • A detailed mangrove management plan along with conservation measures and afforestation activities should be provided
  • During construction and operation of the project there should be no disturbance to the mangroves
  • Details of the quantity of dredging and the disposal of dredged material including reclamation should be provided

This is another drive of builders and land mafia to make people invest in waste lands around mangalore. Most of the projects allocated earlier are still in paper and yet to conclude.

A shipyard project any where in the coastal area of Mangalore will be an ideal proposition for Mangalore. With an ideal Mazagon Shipyard in Bombay and also an ideal shipyard in Cochin, an additional shipyard in Mangalore, south of Goa, will bring multitude of benefis to the offshore industry in the West Coast region of India. Initial phases of a shipyard industry will open doors for further expansion on refurbishing of offshore drilling rigs, fabrication of offshore platforms and many other offshore facilities including stationing of supply boats, work boats etc., relating to the energy sector.

We had an opportunity of visiting Thannirubhavi area during our last visit to Mangalore and we were highly impressed to see even a large floating barge in that area whereby they have mounted even a power generation plant. All these are major developments that Mangalore should be proud of because it brings opportunity of new jobs, new offshore technologies added with various possibilities of also learning the environmental regulations and precautions.

The Petroleum Ministry and Natural Gas authority is currently negotiating Offshore Concessions with foreign companies under NELP scheme that also include major focus throughout the Keral-Konkan basin. Once these major projects come into reality, obviously there will be ample scope for offshore related facilities including laying of offshore pipelines, gathering stations and various production platforms services.

Creation of a shipyard in Mangalore therefore will be a timely thought for our home town that will attract more job opportunities, more technological innovations and most importantly the economic and commercial benefits for " Nummah Mungalooru". Major family conglomerates such as Ambanis, Birlas and Hindujas will also emerge in our home towns with further investments. Our prayers and best wishes therefore go out for the successful implementation of a shipyard project in and around Mangalore.

Let the initial feasibility studies begin and let the experts decide what is good for our children and grand children to maintain our own stability than flooding towards the neighbouring Arab countries for future job opportunities.

One more yard. I remember Mazgaon Dock Yard was run for a while. Is it still running? Did it not stop as that was not viable. Why one more venture? Just for some people to eat money and grab land? More importantly, where are you going to get 2 lakh litre of water every day? Managalore has such a huge shortage of water during Summer months now.

If this project even a portion of its requirement from this grid, then even during rainy seasson with so much water around, Mangalore could face water shortage! What about power? Where are you going to get that from? Approval maduvavara thaleyalli enu segaNi Ideya?
