Sharjah, Feb 16: It was a wonderful and memorable day-long outing at Wanderers Club sports club, Sharjah.'Karaval Milan' an association of 19 Coastal Line parishes of Mangalore Diocese is commended by one and all for its numerous services to the society since its inception. To mark it 8th anniversary Karaval Milan organized Karnataka state-level volleyball and throwball tournament on Friday February 15.

Friday being a day when the people of Sharjah mostly spend the morning sleeping away, the teams and the spectators began to gather at 7.30 am. Such was the response the tournament recieved.

At sharp 9 am the programme kicked-off with a prayer song by Karaval Milan members. After a brief welcome from Karaval Milan president Rony Byndoor games were declared open by well-known personality of UAE, successful business woman and accomplished sportsperson in her hey days Shobha Mendonca. The colourful line-ups from participating teams during the inaugural ceremony was akin to that of any international sports meet.

Shobha Mendonca declared open the throwball tournament in a grand way by releasing colourful red balloons signifying the message of Valentine's Day. She cut the ribbon of the ball which was tied to the playing net and passed some volleys with teams playing in the first round.

Another successful businessman of UAE Alfred D Souza, MD of CAB Real Estate flagged-off the volleyball tournament in a similar fashion by releasing white balloons as a symbol of peace and harmony. He too passed some volleys with the teams playing first.

Twelve volleyball teams for volleyball and six throwball teams gave a very tough and challenging time to their opponents. All the games were played very professionally with each team sweating it out to emerge winners.

After a very tough competition during the first half , Ace Spikers v/s Young Stars Nakre in volley ball and Jashan v/s Bunts Dubai made it to the finals. Ultimately in a nail biting finish Young Stars Nakre emerged winners of volleyball with 27-25 , 26-24 margin and Jashan Dubai in throwball with 15-2 , 15-10 margin.

Both the finals will definitely be remembered as two of the classic games were ever witnessed in UAE. But the match that UAE will never forget is the throwball semi-final clash between Bunts Dubai and KCO Abu Dhabi. The houseful crowd enjoyed this game which had the all the ingredients of a nerve-wrecking match, played for nearly two hours.

In the evening a gala closing ceremony was held. Karaval Milan vice-president Nanu Marol Thottam welcomed the gathering. President Rony Byndoor honoured the guests with floral bouquets. Shailesh of Chavadi restaurant presented the runner-up trophy and indivisual trophies to Bunts Dubai while Alfred D Souza of CAB Real Estate honoured the winners Jashan Dubai with a cash award.

In volleyball section Oliver D'Mello of Al Munasib Building Materials felicitated the runners-up Ace Spikers and Ashok Shetty of Mubarak Gen Trading gave away the winner's trophy, indivisual medals and cash prize to winners Young Stars Nakre.

In Indivisual category Shailesh of Chavadi Restaurant has distributed the Prizes to Nalini of Jashan Dubai as best smasher , Latha Bhandari of Bunts Dubai as best defender , Supriya of Jashan Dubai as Best allrounder and in Volley Ball Lesly Mendonca of young stars Nakre as Best All Rounder , Jayaraj Bangera of Ace Spikers as best smasher and Sarfraz Sr of Young stars Nakre as best lifter.

My message was sent in the spirit of sports to accept and to correct the facts in the future. If you are adamant in trying to hide the facts so be it. I call for an end to this argument.

On reading some comments about refrees decisions, please note, the refrees are not gone through any international qualifications needed to refree. Even if they did mistakes happens. The refrees have done their best. It is easy to comment from outside. Such comments only demoralize the organizers and because of such comments they may hesitate to organize any events in future, with which we may not have such entertainment. I was also there and enjoyed the day irrespective who won the trophy.

Congratulations Karaval Milan for organizing a good tournament and first time with cash prize. Congratulations Jashans for a well deserved victory. It is very fair this year the top four teams of U.A.E. have won one tournament each.(i.e. Mangalore Konkans, Bunts Dubai, Abu Dhabi Kannada Sangha , Jashans Dubai). About some comments made by so called Vandana Rai and Suzy.

One has to accept and learn to accept the defeat gracefully. Vandana Rai- a visitor should learn to write fairly. When your team has not won, please don’t make such comments. As I was also watching the match and as a keen follower of throwball since so many years I feel referees decisions were unbiased .

There were decisions which went against Bunts Dubai also, but they took it in the right spirit and went on to win the game. You came for a visit and please don’t indulge in making statements like, ”losers team as winners.” Bunts Dubai deserved to be called as winners of the semi-finals and runners-up of the tournament.

You are making a statement that the result which your were looking for would make spectators happy. Which spectators are you speaking of ??

This is not the first time Suzy has behaved like a bad loser. Please learn to play, if not atleast learn to accept the defeat gracefully.

The so called professional Throwball players, please stop cribbing now. For me it's another example of the age old story of the "The Fox and the Grapes". The particular game was played within the spirit of the game atleast by the bunts (who did not threaten to walkout of the game), and targetting a particular player (not necessarily the weak player) is a strategy of any game and hopefully the bunts team will continue to doing so in the future matches. I understood that throwball here in gulf is being played as a pass time to relieve from the daily stress and for fun. And please spare the referees from your harsh words, they have done an excellant job to their merit and tried to do their best to give fair decisions. Hence my sincere advise to you to improve your game strategy and atleast try to win one cup before you leave uae for good.

It was a wonderful match. Both teams played well and entertained the spectator fully. In that sense both teams were the winners. However it is very unfortunate Suzy has taken it in a very negative spirit by using all sort of excuses (typical losers excuses). Come on Suzy!! Your loser’s cry only labels you as a bad looser. Attacking a weak player of an opponent is part of a game stratagy. Come on Suzy wake up and learn the basics.

Vandana you are a visitor on a visit visa. You have watched the game and given your comments. The day belonged to the Jashan because they played well on the particular day. But dont ever think BUNTS DUBAI team is a team having no class. Just appreciate the eligible teams which qualified for the finals. Regarding the lost team in the semi-final,they are no match to the Bunts team.

In the past 7 years they have commented more than their actual play. They have to improve on all aspects and to learn what is sportsmanship,Respect the organisers along with the referees who officiated in the hot weather conditions. End of the day they should realise that they lost against a team which has won so many tournaments in the past.

Learn to salute a team which is definitely stronger in all aspects of the game comparing to the lost team in the the semis. Vandana on your next visit make it a point to meet the bunts family members who are behind the success of the Bunts Throwball Team. About you being a player just keep it with you.

Suggestions entertained,But only which is sensible.

Thank you Ms. Vandana for your comments. Many times the ball was caught double by the bunts players but referee never gave the point. When KCO served 21 game point that ball even was double caught by bunts player but was never given. Two referees have to be there for semi final and final matches.

Referee  called the bunts player and asked her tie her hair, is it referees job? Did you see bunts targeting our players? Do you expect the working women here playing throw ball (throw ball is not their profession) one player to receive continuous balls from all the players of the opponent team. Other than bunts no one does this targeting. Hope God will open their eyes one day and show justice to the game.

Congratulations to Jashan Dubai, a well played finals and deserved to be the winners. I really appreciate the way they played and took the position back in the winners list. I am a visitor in Dubai have come to see the dubai festival, and intersted to watch this sports event. I personally watched the Semi-finals between Bunts Dubai and KCO Abu Dhabi and would like to highlight few points.

The match was marvelous. For every sports events success, it’s equally required the player’s hard work and Refree’s Cooperation and good decisions. In this match there was no cooperation from the Refree. First of all when all the refree’s were free sitting and watching the wonderful match, it was compulsorily required to keep a side refree, so that any decision is missed by the main refree can be consulted with the other. Which was not done.

Due to this during the crucial game at the end many points were not noted by the refree, which would have been declared the losers team as winners. This would have been made all the spectators happy to watch the finals between Jashan and the new team for the first time in finals. As I am also a very good throwball player, as I noticed 21-18 was a match point and game was over. but still the game was continued till 23-22.

We request the organizers for the future events, kindly note that, its very important to have side refree for the semi-finals, as there is only one set and there is no time to come back. In this case every point for both the teams is very important. Good luck to all the teams who did not make it to the finals, God bless
