Panaji, Mar 3: The state government has decided to scrap its proposal to allow private medical colleges in the state.
"We have decided not to go ahead with the private medical colleges and in turn would like to strengthen government medical infrastructure," state health minister Vishwajit Rane said.
Goa government had earlier mooted the proposal for private medical colleges across the state. Several reputed institutions had applied for setting up colleges.
The health minister will confirm this decision in the next cabinet meeting.
The State Health Advisory Council, which comprises veteran medicos, had advised the state government against the private medical colleges.
Sources confirmed that the council, which met on Saturday, felt that such a college would draw majority of the staff from already understaffed Goa Medical College and hospital and other two district hospitals - Asilo and Hospicio - located in north and south district respectively.
"Advisory Council unanimously opined that we don't need private medical colleges," Rane said.
The health minister said government is investing into new government hospitals across the state and it ceased with the task to get manpower for the same.
