South Africa's Winnie Mandela in hospital

Johannesburg, Mar 10 (IANS): Former wife of the late Nelson Mandela, Winnei Madikizela-Mandela was on Thursday admitted to a hospital for observation, a statement from her family said.

"Mandela went to the hospital for routine medical check up on Wednesday, March 8. A decision was taken to admit her for further observation," enca.com quoted the statement as saying.

Madikizela-Mandela, 80, was in hospital for several weeks last year for back surgery.

The former first lady during her husband's 27-year incarcerations for his fight against apartheid, campaigned for his release and for the rights of black south Africans, in detention, banished or arrested.

Mandela died in 2013 and made no mention of Madikizela-Mandela in his will.
