BJP forms first govt in Manipur as Biren Singh wins floor test

Imphal, Mar 20 (Agencies): BJP's Nongthombam Biren Singh, who on Wednesday took oath as the Chief Minister of Manipur, won the floor test on Monday with the support of 32 MLAs in the 60-member Assembly.

Yumnam Khemchand Singh of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was elected as the Speaker of Manipur Assembly ahead of the floor test.

The Congress had emerged as the largest party in the state winning 28 seats, but the party fell short of majority.

BJP had won 21 seats and made a bid for power claiming it has the support of 33 legislators in Assembly. Biren Singh was sworn in as the chief minister after Governor Najma Heptulla invited the BJP to form government in the state.

On Wednesday, eight other ministers from the BJP and its alliance partners also took oath along with the chief minister. Y Joykumar of NPP has been designated as the Deputy Chief Minister.

A national level football player-turned-journalist, Biren Singh was a key member of the Congress party when he decided to join BJP in October 2016, after falling out with then-CM Okram Ibobi Singh. Singh started his political journey with a regional Democratic Revolutionary People’s Party in 2002.

Manipur Governor Najma Heptulla on Tuesday invited Singh, who was unanimously elected the leader of the 21-member BJP legislature party on Monday, to form the government.

In a bid to make Congress mukth Bharat BJP once again surrender to the greed of power by election Nongthombam Biren Singh who served as minister under Incumbent Manipur CM Ibobi Singh.
“The Congress has emerged as the single largest party with 28 seats, so as per the Constitution the single largest party should be called first to form the government and prove its strength on the floor of the House.
They are trying to use money power to buy MLAs. This is not only unconstitutional but also a crime.
Instead of making corruption mukt bharat BJP is encouraging corruption using money power.

Congress and Trinamool congress candidate won on the party ticket should be subjected to anti defection law. It is the against the mandate of the voters. Re elections are merely waste on public expenditure. Any candidate crossover should be bar from contesting an election for 5 years or within the same tenure.

The BJP duly staked claim to form the government and also physically presented the 5 supporting MLAs before the Honorable Governor of Jharkhand.
But then, Governor Syed Sibtey Razi did something that shocked and stunned the entire state of Jharkhand. He invited JMM supremo Shibu Soren to form the government. Soren was sworn in as CM and Stephen Marandi as Deputy CM.

@Vinayak.. You are correct. Some people have already created a big mess and ruined the north east in the name of religion. Restructuring is the need of the hour.
