Mumbai, Mar 10: S C Jamir, governor of Goa, assumed the charge of governor of Maharastra at a ceremony held at Darbar Hall, Raj Bhavan, here on Sunday March 9.
Chief Justice of the Mumbai High Court Swatanter Kumar, administered the oath of office to S C Jamir. The outgoing governor S M Krishna and his wife Prema Krishna, chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, chairman of Maharashtra legislative council Shivajirao Deshmukh, ministers Ashok Chavan and Preetam Kumar Shegaonkar, Sheriff of Mumbai Dr Indu Shahani and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
S C Jamir brings with him a rich experience in government, parliament and administration. Jamir was born on October 17, 1931, obtained his bachelor's degree in arts and later took his law degree from the Allahabad University.
He was president of the Students' Christian Movement while at Allahabad University during 1954-1957. In 1960, he was a member of the delegation that met Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in New Delhi, for political talks which resulted in the formation of Nagaland as the 16th state of the Indian union. Jamir is regarded as one of the architects of modern Nagaland.
In 1961, Jamir became the first MP from the state of Nagaland. He was a Member of Parliament from 1961 to 1970, during which period he also served as the union deputy minister of railways, labour and rehabilitation, union deputy minister of community development and cooperation, food and agriculture.
Jamir was first elected to the Nagaland legislative assembly in 1971 and since then he has never lost any assembly election till date. He served the people of Nagaland in various capacities and was the longest serving chief minister of Nagaland. He was the president of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) for eleven years from 1993 to 2004.
S C Jamir took over as the governor of Goa on July 17, 2004. Jamir married Imkonglemla in 1958 and they have three sons and two daughters.
