Mangaluru ranks best in country for quality of life, 12th in global list for healthcare

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Mar 26: Here's some good news for Mangalureans. The city has been ranked 41 in terms of quality of life in a global list, making it the best in India.

The rankings for 2017 were published by Numbeo, an independent user-generated global database, in its website.

What's more, in terms of healthcare, Mangaluru is ranked 12th best in the world, beating even some of the major cities in countries like Australia, the UK and Japan. The fact that Mangaluru is home to some of India's most sought-after medical colleges and hospitals lends credibility to this ranking.

In terms of quality of life, Mangaluru is ranked 41, bettering even San Francisco which is ranked 42. The city at the top of the list is Canberra, Australia, while Caracas, Venezuela is ranked at the bottom with a rank of 143. Mangaluru, in fact, is ranked second best in Asia, after Bursa in Turkey. Surprisinly, Dubai is ranked 9th best in Asia and Abu Dhabi 5th best.

Among other Indian cities, Pune ranks 77, Hyderabd 96, Bengaluru 108, Gurgaon 112, Chennai 128, Delhi 130, Kolkata 138, and Mumbai 139. Overall, India ranks 51 among list of countries.

This data, however, is in stark contrast with that published by Mercer recently, which placed Hyderabad at the top among Indian cities in terms of quality of life.

Quality of life index

Healthcare index

According to the website, quality of life index (higher the better) is an estimation of overall quality of life by using empirical formula which takes into account purchasing power index (higher the better), pollution index (lower the better), house price to income ratio (lower the better), cost of living index (lower the better), safety index (higher the better), health care index (higher the better), traffic commute time index (lower the better) and climate index (higher the better).

In healthcare, Chennai ranks 35, Hyderabad 65, Bengaluru 68, Pune 77, Delhi 89, Mumbai 98, and Kolkata 126.

Healthcare index is an estimation of the overall quality of the healthcare system, healthcare professionals, equipment, staff, doctors, cost, etc. However, the website adds that healthcare and other sub-sections like climate index are based on surveys from visitors of the website. Questions for this surveys are similar to many similar scientific and government surveys.

In terms of pollution levels, Mangaluru is among the least polluted cities in the world. As many as 39 Indian cities are listed here, with Faridabad ranked the most polluted in India with a ranking of 3. Bengaluru is ranked 34 in this list.

When it comes to traffic, Kolkata tops the list, with Mumbai ranked 3rd and Bengaluru 15th. Here, Mangaluru ranks 122, between Brussels (Belgium) and Zagreb (Croatia).

The above are current rankings on the parameters published in the website, which vary from historical rankings on the same parameters. Under historical indeces, Mangaluru ranks 48 in terms of quality of life (still the lone Indian city among top 50), and 29th in terms of healthcare.

Whether these surveys are reliable or not is a question asked by the online community, especially as the results are said to be based on user response to the Numbeo website. Nevertheless, let us rejoice in the fact that Mangaluru being the beautifful city that it is, has been ranked the best in India. That's something all true-blue Mangalureans would definitely agree on! A great way indeed to start its journey towards becoming a Smart City.

Is this supposed to be a joke or a stress reliever in this scorching summer? You dont need a survey agency to manipulate the ground realities and present a rosy picture so that real estate will benefit. Even the common man knows very well the daily struggles he has to face to survive in this city which has been spoilt by terrible planning. No water, no electricity, no place for pedestrians to walk safely, traffic woes in plenty, garbage collection and disposal hardly noteworthy, greenery fast disappearing, weather becoming unbearable, rains becoming lesser every year, education and housing becoming unaffordable ........the list goes on. If the survey is really transparent, please display the parameters on which the ranking was done and let the people decide for themselves.
This agency ranking for Mangalore looks like a marketing gimmick for selling real estate and building momentum for a so called Smart City. Unless you have sensible and practical people ( the smart ones in fact), a Smart City is another waste of time and resources.

Very well said Dominic. It is INDEED cheap marketing gimmick. Everything aimed at destroying whatever is left on Mangalore. Look at Bangalore. I feel sorry for the people living there. 15 years ago, it used to take 2 hours to reach Yeshwanthpur from Electronic City by road. In current conditions, I think you need to leave one day early. We do not want to see the same conditions prevail anywhere in south Kanara, not just Mangalore.

This is indeed a delightful news for Mangalore and also for India. Let's give the benefit of the doubts to Mangalore for what they have achieved in the way of the quality of life. Let's rejoice over the good news and let's pause for a moment to think what is yet to be done by all of us to make Mangalore a better place that ever before to live and prosper. Let us help our City officials and all thsoe that are placed in high positions in order to make the City of Mangalore be placed on a higher pedestal by enriching our standards of health, cleanliness, sanitation, environement, clean air, clean water, broader roads with suitable pathways on both the sides for people to walk freely and safely. Let us give the best of priority for our Education, our Institutions and most importantly our noble leaders who have made this RANK NUMBER ONE possible.

Mangalore has the best of Entrepreneurs who have the knowledge and also the vision to make Mangalore a better place each day. It takes a group effort, and let us therefore give no room for pessimism but let us embrace the good news and assure ourselves that we can do better in order to continue our name and fame all the time. Very easy to comment from a place having all facilities running in an orderly manner!!

With a population of around 5 lacs, it, technically does not even can be termed as a city!!

Get rid of the culture of hate in Mangalore it would be no- 1 in the world. It is a beautiful city with beautiful people. For years it was a city of friends and citizens. With the emergence of the BJP harmony has been destroyed. City needs friendship between communities with less hate and suspicion. It needs a new political culture by replacing the exisiting one

PM Modi's out of 70 years of Congress ruling BJP is ruling Mangalore since 1991 for last 25 years.

Once this place is known for unity and friendly people in our times. It is always stood first in education ranking. Undoubtedly, health sector is better caring due to lack of availability in neighbouring Kerala and North Canara.

For last couple years city is city is only known to the world for bad reasons. It may be Church attacks, pub attacks, morning mist attack, cow vigilantes,Love Jihad etc. The cities deep rooted fascism is hard to clean.

This city must have already reached success at least a decade ago before it got nominated for 'smart city.

To be happy one need job and happy earnings, no debt, peace of mind, safety and security , freedom to eat and practice what he wants, breath fresh air and plenty of resource to fulfill his need.

By considering the above point I seriously doubt the credibility of this survey which Mangaloreans not participated at all.

This city need for smart people. By choosing wrong people's representatives and fanatics runling the day I disagree with the ranking.
