Petrol price cut by Rs 3.77 a litre, diesel by Rs 2.91

New Delhi, Mar 31 (PTI): The price of petrol is cut by Rs 3.77 per litre and that of diesel by Rs 2.91 a litre, the first change in rates in two-and-a-half months.

State-owned oil firms cut rates with effect from midnight tonight. Petrol currently costs Rs 71.14 a litre in Delhi and Diesel is priced at Rs 59.02 per litre.

Petrol price will be cut by Rs 3.77 per litre, excluding state levies, said Indian Oil Corp (IOC). Actual decrease will be larger after taking into account the local levies. Similarly, diesel rate was cut by Rs 2.91, excluding state levies.

Rates were last revised on January 16 when price of petrol went up by 54 paise. On that date, diesel rates were hiked by Rs 1.20 a litre.

"The current level of international product prices of petrol and diesel and INR-USD exchange rate warrant decrease in selling price of petrol and diesel, the impact of which is being passed on to the consumers with this price revision," IOC said in a statement.

IOC said the movement of prices in the international oil market and INR-USD exchange rate shall continue to be monitored closely and developing trends of the market will be reflected in future price changes.

India couldn't have been in a better position than it is today, thanks to the crash in crude oil prices. The crash has helped the Indian economy at a time when countries like Russia, Taiwan and Brazil are facing recession while China's growth is at a 25-year low. It has helped the Indian government revive three things which are critically important to the economy inflation, interest rates and fiscal deficit. Look back to about three years ago and it was these very factors that almost derailed the Indian economy.
The crude oil prices, which are at 12-year lows in dollar terms, have helped our economy to reach a better position than our peers. But the question that remains is -- if crude oil is 75% down from July 2014 levels in the international market why haven't we been benefited in the same ratio? Some critics have also pointed out that when the crude oil was $150 per barrel in 2012-13, petrol prices were ₹70 per litre, now that the crude prices are $33 a barrel, petrol prices are near ₹60. Why so?
Since the crude oil prices crashed, excise duty on petrol has increased 34% while those on diesel increased by a whopping 140%. Hence, the end user ends up paying taxes and excise duty which is more than the actual cost of petrol or diesel. Of the ₹57 we pay for a litre of petrol, nearly 44% is diverted to the government. Similarly, of the ₹44 paid for diesel, 55% is in the form of government tax.
PM Modi, now BJP cabinet colleague blamed Congress for price hike when crude oil in his peak. Why isn't the crude oil crash reaching the end user?
In fiscal 2015, benefits of the crude oil crash to India stood at ₹2 lakh crore. Where are those BJP troll army selling 'Zandu balm' ?Where is all those additional profit money gone?

Uneducated people should first know that oil prices are not controlled by government anymore, its the state owned oil companies who will come up with the prices and this was done by UPA-2

Since Rupee is currently getting stronger day by day I think we can expect one more reduction if oil prices states stable in international market.. Lets hope for the best

Dollar is currently trading for 64.81 per rupee, downfall started after Demonetization, with this rate we should be seeing dollar at 55.00 per rupee by the year end only if the trend continues

When BJP came to power in May 2014 the dollar value was at 60 and the trade deficit was all time high at 137 Billion dollars (Approximately), that means we imported more than our exports in US dollars due to lack of reforms by the then UPA-2, the dollar value shot up, since there was more demand for dollar in terms of trade due to high imports....

As per FEB 2017 trade deficit is at 100 Billion dollar compared to 137 billion when UPA-2 Handed over..

That's why I am saying the US dollar value will fall in coming days, since there is steps taken to reduce some of the imports like gold and fall in US dollar with stable crude oil prices will bring down the oil prices more in coming months

Economics is not a LKG subject dear.. when the govt was handed over, huge debt was also handed over.. and this debt has to be cleared and modi cannot keep it with raising interest.. in the process the govt will have to control on further subsidies... thats why petrol price does not fall each time crude price falls...However if congis pay their debt from the looted money, then modi can reduce petrol price far lower... possible? LOL
