'Devil enters through pocket'- Pope Francis warns against church careerism

Vatican City, Apr 2 (IANS) : Addressing an audience of Spanish Archbishops on Saturday, Pope Francis warned that the Devil entered through the pocket, urging the religious leaders to cultivate the spirit of poverty.

The Archbishops of Valladolid, Sevilla and Toledo had gathered at the Vatican to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Pontifical San Jose Spanish School in Rome, Efe news reported.

"Don't forget this. The Devil enters via the pocket," said Francis, adding: "please, eschew ecclesiastical careerism...it's a curse."

The pontiff said "you cannot be content with a comfortable, worry-free life without feeling the need to cultivate the spirit poverty rooted at the Heart of Christ."

He said the formation of a priest must not only be academic, although that was an important aspect, but rather should incorporate all facets of life.

Priests must not be content with getting a degree, but must also be full time disciples, he said.

The pope held the meeting in Clementine Hall of the Apostolic Palace.

There are lots of attack on Christians in many countries where they are a minority. The recent on being Pakistan. In countries like Iraq, Syria, wemen are traded as commodities and taken as sex slaves. The Pope has not uttered a single word against this. He can easily influence the UN. However you see he flies to countries like US,UK and enjoys the luxuries.

The Diocesan Priests in India are really living in Luxury. They should be tarrgetted and made to take the Vow of Poverty. Pope Francis should amend this and incorporate this Vow when they are Ordained. They do not visit the homes of the poor and bias rules their lives.

Vincent, what have you done for your Priest and your parish or for your fellow human ? It is easy to target others. I am sure people like you take priests for granted and want them to visit every house. If they visit your house, do you have time to sit and talk to them ? Vincent, Priests are God's chosen one. Every Tom, Dick and Harry can not be a Priest.

Most are career priests. They find priesthood more lucrative than other professions. They do not smell the ship. When there are celebrations of the aristocrats you see them all. Who cares for the poor? Forget about the poor outside but even within the community they do not care. Why do they need latest models of cars and comforts when they say they are called to be poor?

Very good advice for our priests who run business through educational institutions in the name of minority institutions. Collection of donations while admitting poor students to schools and colleges is a crime which Pope Francis is referring to here.

May be they take donations but they impart quality of education. Also, donation is required to run the Institution. If anyone feels they are doing wrong by taking donations, they are free to seek admission in government schools.
