Kasargod, Apr 7: The presence of mind and timely action of trackman, who was checking the tracks, has averted a major train mishap in Chittari here.

Trackman named Vijayan found cracks on the tracks between Bekal Fort and Kanhangad on Friday morning, April 7.

There were very few minutes left for the arrival of Thiruvananthapuram – Mangaluru and Malabar rail. Immediately the staff brought it to the notice of the pilot by exploding a detonator. After seeing the smoke, the train was stopped at a distance of about 600 meters.

Railway engineers, who arrived after getting the information, repaired the tracks.

Three trains had passed just before the cracks were noticed.

The train traffic resumed after about two and a half hours.
