Petrol pumps want Sunday off, 6-9 work, commission hike

Mumbai, Apr 11 (Deccan Chronicle): As many as 25,000 petrol pumps in some parts of country will down their shutters starting May 14 every Sunday, according to a report in Business Standard.

The call by petrol pumps under the umbrella of Consortium of Indian Petroleum Dealers was seen as in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's push for a less fuel consumption regime.

However, the report adds the decision might be a pressure tactics employed by these dealers for getting a hike in commission on fuel sale.

Consortium of Indian Petroleum Dealers claims it has some 25,000 petrol pumps in its kitty in parts of Maharashtra and some pockets of southern India.

Interestingly, the All India Petroleum Dealers' Association has distanced itself from the announcement and said that it was not part of the agitation.

Earlier, the CIPD has raised its demand for a hike in commission on fuel sales. The government has still not taken any decision on the demand, but it is now highly likely that government will accelerate its procedure to redress their appeal.

"Except for emergency services like ambulance, fuel will not be available for other vehicles on Sundays," Business Standard quoted CIPD president A D Sathyanarayan as saying. The association is also considering an eight-hour working days from May, he added.

Conservation of fuel is as important as consumption of water due to growing demands all over India with growing population and growing activity of all kinds. Sunday is a Day of sabath and a day off might be the best way to encourage families to unite together and spend their precious time with simple things within their own four walls of their home. Besides, it also gives a time off for thousands of workers at the Gas stations, and spend their time with their families. These are the simple family values that India is prominent for, and might be the best way to adapt for long term benefit.

New automations have come in force where many countries have their gas pumps available with the help of the credit card, but this automation is not required at this stage, but gradually might be important so that many workers could be diverted to other professions with more wages and better prospects.
