Election Commission issues 'open challenge' to people to hack EVMs

New Delhi, Apr 12 (PTI): The Election Commission today threw an "open challenge" to people to hack its EVMs, a move which comes after opposition parties urged it to revert to the paper ballot system raising doubts over infallibility of the machines.

"From first week of May, experts, scientists, technocrats can come for a week or 10 days and try to hack the machines," an official source said.

They said the challenge will be open for a week or 10 days and will have various levels.

The Commission had announced a similar challenge in 2009 and it claimed no one could hack its electronic voting machines (EVMs).

These machines can be tampered or manipulated when programmer happens to be from a political affiliate, The one who has the knowledge & access to them can do it before it is sent for voting booths & not some EVMs which weren't fitted with these hacking software or hardware.
The election commission need to probe all the disputed machines in UP within a year by an impartial agency under the supervision of Supreme Court & instead of boasting or playing these gimmicks it better stop advising other parties what they should do clean their house first.
It better stop acting like some party member in its actions & words as it is proving now.

EC should not consider the charges of the opposition as child's play and exhibit child psychology by offering 'open challenge' to people to hack EVMs. How was the EVM hacking displayed before the MP by-elections??? Let the EVMs used in all the 5 State elections which included UP be subject to verification and matter settled. People of India need to be given confidence that their vote is not manipulated by vested interests. EVMs operate on a software and a computer has a GIGO effect. When it is manipulated it can have a disastrous effect.

In India the EVM have two parts. On the balloting unit the voters press the button and the control unit gives the command to the polling officer who sits in the polling booth. These components of the EVM are inter connected and also, through a fifteen feet long cable, the control unit's button rests with the polling officer. One EVM can record maximum 3,840 votes.
Before the EVMs came into vogue,a ballot paper was given to each voter after which nobody other than the voter had any control on the casting of the votes. The manual ballot has, in the recent past, been replaced by a system where the polling officer presses the ballot button and only then the balloting unit is open for casting the vote. After a voter presses a button on this unit, the red LED indicator should light up and a whistle sound should come from the machine. But if that doesn't happen then millions of the illiterate and rural voters would not realize that the vote has not been cast.
Simultaneously, after the button is pressed, the EVM is again locked automatically for any further voting. Pressing any button again will not be counted as a vote. This system has originally been devised to ensure that no registered voter can cast multiple votes. Yet, avoidable discretion does now lie with the polling officer who has the EVM control trigger in hand. This surely casts aspersions on high values of total democratic transparency.
As the EVM unit can accommodate only a given max number of votes, it enables a candidate to easily know about the number of persons who have voted for him through that particular EVM.That is susceptible to vitiating the winner's mind towards those areas where he was not the voters' choice.

Only Ballot papers can speak voters once heart.

the EVM is so primitive in design that it cannot be hacked. It is like trying to alter the functioning of pocket calculator. Also, on the day of voting, just before the commencement of voting, mock poll is conducted where all party agents cast their vote and verify the proper working of the machine. The system is fool proof. Election commission is strong and is doing a very good job. we should be proud of it instead of passing cheap comments.

Paper ballots are easiest to manipulate So only EVM came in. In all states where BJP has won their vote share was identical to 2014 vote percentage. I do not believe EVM has tampered. Had it been the case BJP should have won Delhi, Bihar, Goa, Punjab since all of these states were crucial.
Now coming to the reason why beating BJP is tough these days, well it's an open secret its DeMo. No other opposition party has financial like BJP. Parties like BSP who were out of power could not spend anything on the election. But no one can claim this reason in public, hence EVM Natak!

Election Commission supposed to throw this open challenge on 11th March, not now if they are so honest. After hiding the tampered EVMs and after fixing some of them, now challenging opposition parties??? Still EC is not sure and not ready. They are going to give this EVMs for testing on 1st week of May only. So they will get some more time to destroy the evidence of tampering.
