Udupi, Feb 23: St Cecily’s English Medium Higher Primary School (CBSE), Udupi, a premier institution in the district, has opened admissions for the academic year 2025-26 from play home to Grade 9. With a legacy of 66 years, the school stands as a beacon of holistic and value-based education, shaping thousands of students over the decades.

Established in 1959 in response to local demand for convent education, the school is managed by the Apostolic Carmel sisters. It started with just 24 students and soon flourished, reaching nearly 900 students within a few years, a testament to its quality education.

A journey through history

St Cecily’s School began in May 1918 with only three classes and expanded steadily, becoming a full-fledged high school in 1933. Kannada was introduced as the medium of instruction in 1946. However, parents sought an exclusive English medium school for their children, leading to the establishment of a private English medium school in 1959 with 24 students from Classes 1 to 3.

In 1965, the school received permission to run Classes 1 to 4, followed by official recognition from the Education Department in 1966. Subsequent years saw the addition of Classes 5 to 7. As student numbers grew, a new block was constructed and blessed by Rt Rev Dr Basil Salvadore D’Souza, then bishop of Mangalore, on December 20, 1991. This block housed the English medium school, while the original building continued as the Kannada primary school.

The Golden Jubilee Memorial Block, equipped with modern facilities, was inaugurated on February 16, 2010, by Dr Sr M Olivia AC, then provincial superior, and the plaque was unveiled by the late Oscar Fernandes, Rajya Sabha member.

Transition from state syllabus to CBSE

To meet the growing academic expectations of parents, the school upgraded to Class 8 in 2022 and obtained CBSE Board affiliation in 2022-23. The institution was granted permission to commence CBSE sessions from April 1, 2023.
