UP CM's decision to set up anti-Romeo squads popular: Survey

New Delhi, Apr 16 (PTI): Nearly a month into his tenure, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's popularity has soared with his swoop on illegal abattoirs and "anti-Romeo" drives capturing the public imagination, a survey has claimed.

The decisions, that critics said were components of a larger saffron project, enjoy a high degree of popularity among the people, suggested the survey that was conducted among 2,000 respondents spread across 20 districts of the state.

Adityanath's drive against illegal slaughterhouses, anti-Romeo squads, action against VIP culture and ban on paan masala and tobacco in government offices came up as the most popular decisions in the survey conducted by Gaon Connection, a rural media platform.

While the crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses got 38.1 per cent approval, the formation of the anti-Romeo squads was hailed by around 25.4 per cent of the respondents, it said in a statement.

Interestingly, among women, the anti-Romeo drive emerged as the most popular decision with around 37 per cent approving it, despite instances of alleged police excesses and gender activists highlighting its adverse impact on autonomy and the right to make choices.

On the other hand, the action against slaughterhouses have had a debilitating impact on the state's meat industry. It has also reportedly emboldened cow vigilantes and fringe outfits active in this field.

Overall, decisions taken by the Adityanath-led BJP government have 62 per cent approval ratings while 71 per cent citizens feel the firebrand Hindu leader, seen as a highly polarising figure in the past by his critics, is working in the "right direction", the survey said.

"The districts where the survey was carried out ranged from Lalitpur in the underdeveloped Bundelkhand region in UP's southwest to Sonbhadra in the remote southeast, from Meerut in the west to Siddharthnagar in the east," Gaon Connection said.

Adityanath's stunning elevation as chief minister, following BJP's landslide victory where it won 325 seats in the 403-member state assembly, was seen as a move to stamp Hindu supremacy and, in this context, many saw the long shadow of his past in his first few decisions.

"The serious issue of violence against women and routine sexual harassment of women in Uttar Pradesh cannot be addressed by setting up anti-Romeo squads. These 'squads' impose their own aggressive and arbitrary code through moral policing," .
"It has already come to light that in many cases, these 'anti-Romeo squads' have become an even greater source of harassment and fear for women and men."
In a statement issued late on Tuesday, more than 20 prominent women's rights activists called on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party, to end the squads.
Indian "anti-Romeo" police squads set up to protect women from sexual harassment in public places should be disbanded because their heavy-handed tactics and moral policing are leaving people insecure and fearful, women's rights activists.
The BJP ruled Madhya Pradesh under CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan is one of the worst example were India registered highest rape cases despite round the clock vigilance by this unruly mob.

This unknown surve body is only legitimising the 'anti-romeo' like 'cow vigilantes' set up by BJP ruled states which acts above the law of the land.

Unfortunately this anti Romeos have no courtesy for those sisters forced to sell their skin for living or clinics aborting female feticide.

I am glad that Siddu led INC has curbed this riot-wing menace in Karnataka. We have not forgotten how bad the situation was when bj party ruled us from 2008-2008 and 2008 to 2013. There used to be regular cases of immoral rowdisym. Some men like Shri Pumpwell's, Shri Attavar's from various senas / dalas used to have full backing of their high command to foment trouble.

People of KA want jobs, roads, welfare schemes and not the HATE MONGERING schemes of those anti-social elements.

What's so popular about brutally thashing law abiding adults?? Infact these 'immoral rowdies' should be arrested for physically attacking others under IPC. Its a pity that people of U.P have voted for law-breaking criminals.

As I understand from the news article, crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses got 38.1 per cent approval. So 61.9% of the respondents disapproved the idea.
The anti-Romeo squads was hailed by around 25.4 per cent of the respondents. It means 74.6% condemned it!

Can anyone correct me if I got it all wrong.
