Woman killed over dowry dispute in Bengal


Kolkata, April 22 (IANS): A woman was killed by her husband and in-laws over a dowry dispute in West Bengal's Howrah district, police said on Saturday.

"Purnasree Samanta (22) was murdered in Shyampur area on Friday evening," a police official said.

"The husband and the in-laws were arrested on Saturday morning, on the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim's family," he said.

According to her parents, Samanta who was married for almost four years, was often tortured at her in-laws house over money.

"They have killed my daughter. She was often heckled and tortured as we could not pay the amount of dowry they demanded," the victim's father said.

Police said no external marks of injury or assault were found on the woman's body.

"An autopsy will identify the real cause of death," the official added.
