Bahrain: Fake Policemen Arrested for Theft

Gulf Daily News

Bahrain, Mar 26: TWO men pretending to be undercover police have been arrested for stealing BD680 from a coffee shop in Manama.

"The Bahraini defendants, in their 20s, walked into the shop during its closing hours while an Indian employee was still there," a Public Prosecution spokesman said yesterday.

"They entered the shop pretending to be police officers after spotting the employee counting the day's earnings.

"They said that they were undercover police and were investigating a rumour that the money he had was forged.

"However, the employee refused to give them the money and told them to leave, but the defendants started threatening him. "They walked over to him and started pushing him around. One of them was able to grab the cash register's key and snatched BD680 from it."

The employee tried fighting back, but by the time he got off the floor, the two men had escaped and driven away.

He later told the police that he often sees the two defendants around with a regular customer in the shop.

Investigations led police to the customer, who helped them track down the two men.

They both confessed to their charges and are being held on charges of theft until their cases go to court next week.
