Washington, May 9 (IANS): More than two-fifths of American voters oppose the new Republican legislation aimed at repealing and replacing Obamacare or the Affordable Care Act (ACA), a new poll has revealed.
Forty-four per cent oppose the new legislation called the American Health Care Act (AHCA), while 31 per cent favour the Republican plan, The Hill magazine quoted the HuffPost/YouGov poll released on Monday.
A quarter of those polled were unsure.
The survey results come after the House last week narrowly passed the AHCA, which aims to repeal and replace key provisions of Obamacare.
Support for the new bill is split along party lines, with 69 per cent of Republicans supporting the plan while 70 per cent Democrats opposed it.
Eleven per cent of Republicans oppose the legislation, with 20 per cent who said they were not sure if they favoured or opposed it. Among Democrats, 13 per cent favour the bill and 17 per cent were unsure.
The survey was conducted on May 6, polling 1,000 adults online.
While Republicans have touted the bill's passage through the House as a win, Democrats have vowed to ramp up their efforts against vulnerable lawmakers in the 2018 midterms, reports The Hill magazine.
The Senate is currently conducting a working review of the bill.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConell over the weekend said he does not expect help from Democrats as the upper chamber tries to pass its own version of the legislation.
