CAS to examine Spanish runner's appeal against ban in June

Madrid, May 13 (IANS): The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will on June 21 examine the appeal by athlete Adel Mechaal against a decision by the Spanish anti-doping agency AEPSAD which has banned him until December 2017.

The European 5,000 metres silver medallist has appealed to the CAS that the sanction for the ban from January to December 2017, imposed by the AEPSAD is suspended, it was announced on Friday, reports Efe.

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) asked AEPSAD for the Mechaal case file in October 2016, after he allegedly missed doping tests in December 2015, January 2016 and July 2016, which prevented him from competing in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016.

IAAF suspended the sanction for the first time in December 2016 but AEPSAD cancelled this decision and banned him until December 2017.

CAS accepted Mechaal's request for another precautionary suspension of his sanction and will hear the case in June, according to the CAS website.
