Udupi, Mar 30: The two-day annual communication fest of the Manipal Institute of Communication under the theme ‘Freedom Your Right’ kicked off here on Saturday March 29.
The programme was inaugurated by Manipal University pro chancellor Dr H S Ballal. Speaking on the occasion Ballal opined that the teachers should be proper communicators, whose responsibility it is to guide the students in a proper manner. According to him, changes in the media scene have occured as a result of the application of new information technologies. Online media experts like Tapas Ray have brought great changes in online journalism for the pupil, he averred.
Ballal further informed "On-line journalism allows reporters to be more careful while doing their jobs, which is more than just traditional reporting. Usually journalist don't go deep into news, they stay at surface level. Whereas on-line journalism on the other hand, allows a reporter to go into depths. On-line media is in-fact a unique media which offers multi-media possibility and linkages to vast amount of information to related sources," Ballal elucidated.
In his address columnist and veteran journalist T J S George opined lack of choices in society, is not good for society as this has resulted in reduction of rights of the press and options for independence in todays' journalism. He strongly criticized lack of press freedom, which he felt is a wrong concept and which has no basis in today’s India. Only freedom of business houses and owner exits and the whole concept is given of freedom to fool the public, he condemned.
The fest will end on Sunday March 30 and at the concluding ceremony, participants will be presented the ‘Express Award’. For the award, colleges from all over the country like Loyala academy in Secunderabad, Lady Sri Ram college Delhi, Film and Television Institute, (FTII) Pune, Indraprastha college for women under Delhi university, St Aloysius college, Mangalore and MIT Manipal have all sent in their entries.
Director Borshiva Das Gupta, script writer Atul Tiwari and MIC honorary director M V Kamath were present.
