Mangalore, Mar 30: Today's society is respecting wealth because of lack of value base. Therefore, one feels that if he acquires wealth, society will respect him. Hence, the society should distinguish between legitimacy and illegitimacy between wealth, said Justice N Santhosh Hegde, Lokayukta of Karnataka.

Speaking after distributing 'Rachana Awards' at Milagres Jubilee hall on Sunday, March 30 evening, he said that the office bearers of Rachana should help in curbing corruption by neither giving nor taking bribe. Lokayukta will definitely help in this regard, he assured.

Certain state awards are presented to hundreds of people at a time which sends wrong signal to the society. This is the cause of maladministration and corruption also.

Meanwhile, Rachana has selected persons who deserve this honour. But the awardees also owe something to the society which they can set off by engaging themselves in for worthy causes in the society, he urged.

A total of 86 government officials have been booked in the last 90 days who acquired wealth hundreds of times more than their income. These figures may look small when compared to thousands of corrupt officers in the state. However, the Lokayukta raids have created a fear in the officers minds, he opined.

"Please be happy with what you have. You can be happy with Rs 35 thousand salary per month and unhappy with Rs 75 thousand per month. If we continue the same corrupt system, where will we go?" he questioned.

Meanwhile, he presented Rachana Awards to Francis D'Souza Belthangady (agriculturist), Ivan Castelino Mumbai (entrepreneur), Dr Edward Nazareth (professional) and James Mendonca (NRI entrepreneur).

Bishop Aloysius Paul D'Souza presided over the function. Lancy D'Cunha, president of Catholic Sabha was present on the dais.

Marcel Monteiro welcomed the gathering. Titus Noronha highlighted on Rachana's efforts in honouring distinguished personalities for their contribution in their chosen sphere. Ronald Gomes proposed vote of thanks. Leslie Rego and Melita Pinto compered the programme

I agree with Mr Santhosh Hegde's advise to the young people towards corruption and impact over current economy. he should be give full support and responsibility fo find out the corruption takes place in Hospital business , corporate decision, Trading, election, power, commodity, policy, private sector, constriction, and other segment of life and business, so that young generation should not follow the same procedure like their father or whoever,,..

All we need bring the end to corruption and maintain dignity of about, so that every one live happily.. In south canara only few families live happily, that is Doctors, business people (only few) , police department, sales and tax officers, and other government officers … why?? How about common man…?
