Mangalore, Mar 31: The civic authorities had to face a strong opposition from the footpath vendors when they carried out the eviction of their petty stalls near Central Market on Monday March 31.

The vendors attacked the civic workers with areca leaves when they started evicting their petty stalls erected all along the Linking Road, near Central Market and at State Bank bus terminus.  The policemen who accompanied the civic workers resorted to mild caning in order to disperse the attacking vendors.

The civic authorities seized about 3 truck loads of vegetables and fruits from the street vendors in the drive against illegal retailing on busy streets, which took place between 10.00 am and 12.30 pm on Monday, informed Praveenchandra Karkera, assistant revenue officer of Mangalore City Corporation MCC).

MCC has been undertaking eviction drive against illegal retailing on push-carts and on pavements from time to time. These street vendors make brisk business as they are common man’s choice to buy daily vegetables and fruits.

MCC do not sleep! At last you have woken up! The visit of Mayors and some Corporators to foreign countries finally paying off! But beware, this is not enough. Cleaning means not one or two streets, but the entire area under Mangalore Corporation. You may have troubles, but you have started cleaning, dont target only these people, but you must continue the drive against everyone who has encroached the public area/land irrespective class, culture and religion. You will be successful only when you do like this. Do not fear.My best wishes to all of you

There are two elements involved here. One the hawkers are illegally hawkng their goods on the pavements without any fee, which ethically speaking is WRONG(Sometimes a daily fee is collected by the gate collector as they are called) and the other is the licensed hawkers inside the legal premises who go about doing business for a fee paid by them as rent and tax on a monthly basis.

While the pavement hawkers make brisk business during peak business times and depart, the regular shop vendors are left to their own devices the entire day depending on the customers. There are also hidden elements involved in this area, the regular policemen on beat(One needs to check out on any sunday in the market road to central market are)who demand a regular bribe. Then appear the serious, honest looking municial officers who come about doing a pretentious inspection, who also demand bribe in all types.

These municipal officers propose to the corporation to eradicate these street vendors and erect non movable structures in the form of buildings for the betterment of these hawkers and on completion of these buildings, themselves acquire them and then rent them out. Take the buildings erected in the area of nanthur park, these are mostly allotted to corporators who in turn rent them out to the public and make some more (MORE) money in the process after all they are representing the local areas and off course they do help when you need the lights fixed when the street lights are out etc.

People of Mangalore, wake up please from the deepest slumber you have all been sleeping. My one and only question with regard to the above article on eviction of street hawkers is what happens to all the goods, tables etc confiscated in the process? If it is not released by the individual owners by claiming it for a fine, where does it all go. Has any Mangalorean ever asked any official about it.

This is really ridiculous.......only poor people are targeted and not the rich one ......i know footpath are meant for pedestrian to walk, however the autorithy should allocate some place to them to do the business and also should take certain steps to demolish unauthorised building.

The authorities should have evicted then and given their belongings instead of stealing them off or maybe even selling them off later.. do you think that the collected goods will be destroyed.. no way.. it will be redistributed to the staff at the great MCC..

Taking action only against such vendors is unfair. They should first take action against those who have illegally occupied portions of government owned roads for constructing commercial buildings and those who have not provided for parking facilities in the buildings.

I feel very sorry for the poor vendors, They should be given back what is taken. I can say the main reason for this is population growth. Vendors make business on streets without permission. One day this is going to happen.

For example: a person does his business where it is not authorised, when he is alone it will go smoothly, but looking at this the other vendors start their business on that place(not authorised). At that time when this place is asked to vacate, he should vacate, because it is not permitted to do business in that place.

Even the authorities should be punished severly, beacuse they take bribe from this vendors and help them. If the authorities would have taken step when the first vendor had started business. There would not be any problem. But first authority should take steps to demolish the unauthorised buildings.

No doubt the city footpaths are meant for the pedestrians but there are the poor vendors who have to maintain their families. The corporation will do well by giving these vendors an alternate place to run their business.

Did the Civic authorities issue any prior notice or warning to footpath vendors before they evict their petty stalls, vegetables & fruits? The Civil authorities should arrange the suitable places to footpath vendors.

These authorities do not have guts (rather bribed) to take actions against big fishes, building law violators. For fake fame, every 15 days they trouble poor vendors whose life depends on day to day selling...Please provide them some place for selling. India is shining only for corrupt people
