Storm Beatriz makes landfall in Mexico


Brasilia, June 2 (IANS): Tropical storm Beatriz, which formed off Mexico's southern coast, made landfall in the state of Oaxaca, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) announced.

The agency said on Thursday night that the storm was located 35 km north of Puerto Angel, Oaxaca, and moving north-northeast at 9 km per hour, Efe news reported.

It is generating sustained winds of 65 km per hour and gusts of 85 kph.

According to the SMN, Beatriz could produce torrential storms and dump over 250 mm of rain in Oaxaca, Veracruz, Chiapas and Tabasco states, and approximately 150 to 250 mm of rain in Campeche and Puebla.

High waves of 2.5 to 3.5 metres are also expected off the coasts of Guerrero and Oaxaca.

The agency said Beatriz will move inland early Friday morning.
