Mangalore, Apr 12: Tension prevailed in Mura at airport road on Saturday, April 12 when a contract labourer was electrocuted while working on an electric pole, owing to the gross negligence on the part of MESCOM.

People who gathered at the spot at about on 11.30 am protested against MESCOM and urged the authorities to take action against the officers who were responsible for this incident.

A certain Ganesh, was working on the electric pole after disconnecting the electricity flow.  An unknown MESCOM official allowed electricity to flow on this line which caused Ganesh's death.

Immediately, locals gathered on the spot in big numbers and staged a protest against the MESCOM authorities. Moreover, they did not allow the body to be lowered from the pole. Finally MESCOM authorities paid a visit to the spot to convince the locals.

Meanwhile, MESCOM has agreed to pay Rs 1.5 lac as compensation to the deceased person's family. A case has been registered at Bajpe police station and KSRP force has been deployed at the spot.

Its easy to blame the public, but the fact is that we didnt have electricity since morning yesterday. And people have their work to do.If it was the calls that made the MESCOM go and put fuse then it is also their duty to ensure no line work is being done at that particular point.

Another point is no MESCOM official had been present for hours after the incident took place only those who saw the body hang on those wires know what a tragic death he got.It is essential that one place himself in the shoes of the workers who work in such conditions before they comment

It is a saddening event. It shows how MESCOM is ill equipped to protect its workers. Whether just Rs.1.5 lakh compensation will do ? Why before energising the line they did not ensure that some one is working at a certain point or not? The KEB (now ESCOMs) people know how to get away with their faults . This will be just one more in the line.

The puplic to be held responsibloe for such accidents. They have the tendency to scold MESCOM authorities whenever there is breakdown of electricity and have no patience to hear the reason. The MESCOM officer concerned must have yielded to such a harsh call from the public before ordering to allow electricity.
