Delhi BJP leader shares Gujarat riots photo claiming it's from Bengal

New Delhi, Jul 10 (PTI): Delhi BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma came under fire from Twitter users for allegedly passing off a picture of the 2002 Gujarat riots as that of the violence in West Bengal's Basirhat.

"Since trolls spent a sleepless night covering-up Basirhat violence, sharing media pics of the riots. Hope they report this to @WBPolice too," Sharma posted on the micro- blogging site and attached an image of charred vehicles along with it.

The twiterrati, however, pointed out to her that the image was from 2002 and accused her of spreading a rumour.

Sharma, in a defiant tone, said the photo reflected the reality of Bengal, irrespective of the place. "I received a flyer from organisers of Save Bengal protests and I put it out. This has woken up the people in Lutyen's Delhi who have maintained a stoic silence on Bengal till now," added the leader. "

Many Twitter users tried to draw the attention of the Delhi Police towards the tweet and demanded that she be arrested.

"Requesting @WBPolice to take my tweet as a Complaint against @NupurSharmaBJP for her fake and provocative posts and Arrest her immediately," said a Twitter user. "Can't trust any BJP handle these days. Films, old riots all is being passed off as Bengal," said another.

Some even asked why Twitter didn't take action against such people.

But, Sharma begged to differ on the subject. "There are questions being asked on the unrelated picture, but why is there reaction on the riots in Bengal or on minority appeasement that is happening there."

Why have these worthies fallen for such obvious faleshoods and why did they not get their researchers to do basic due diligence? One possible answer is that they get the material from the party and simply forward it. Alternatively, they are in such a hurry to hit out at the party’s ‘enemies’ – sickulars, libtards, presstitutes and Congi slaves – that they grab every opportunity; to them, the veracity of what they post does not matter, only its contents do. Plain lies has become an important weapon in the BJP’s armoury.

There is also a third, more sinister possibility: that they – and this includes not just the average bhakt but also the influencers – are fully aware that they are circulating lies, but they want it to have an impact before they withdraw or delete it (without any apology). The idea is to reach the maximum number of fervid believers who swallow all kinds of rubbish claims as long as these conform with their prejudices – if the message comes from someone high enough, like an MP, it carries even more weight. It then gets further circulated and amplified via WhatsApp and word of mouth, maximising its impact.

Thus, old style rumour mongering has been given an extra edge by technology. The question of whether the information is real or fake becomes redundant in these circumstances. In fact, as the fakery-busting site Alt-news has shown, there is an entire cottage industry of fake news coming out of Basirhat.

This cannot be a coincidence. Nupur Sharma’s tweet indicates that the party is now beyond caring about truth and authenticity in its messaging. The stakes are now higher and the political opponent has to be attacked by any means possible. Truth and fact-checking, in the circumstances, are a needless luxury.

Desperate effort to instigate riots in order to destabilize present state govt. and to kindle existing chaos in the state. Very crooked and dangerous crave for power which will break unity of India and will result in utter chaos across the country. We are going through a very explosive situation. If peace loving citizens do not wake up now, there is no doubt our beautiful country will be worst than Iraq, Syria or Pakistan. Only God can save our country.
