Gopalkrishna Gandhi is opposition candidate for Vice President

New Delhi, Jul 11 (IANS): Opposition parties on Tuesday named Gopalkrishna Gandhi as their candidate for the August 5 Vice Presidential election.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi made the announcement at a meeting of 18 parties here, informed sources said.

Hamid Ansari has been the Vice President and ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha since August 11, 2007. He won a second term on August 11, 2012. His current term ends on August 10.

    BJP is fooling 'Dalits' of India by nominating as if they are first of India since 1947 elected President to the sub caste.
    In fact Congress elected as the ninth Vice President in 1992, Narayanan went on to become President in 1997. He was the first and, so far, only – member of the Dalit community, to hold the post.He became the first Dalit to obtain a Master's degree in English Literature with a first class from University of Travancore.On August 21, 1992 he was sworn in as the Vice-President of the country.On July 25, 1997, he took office as the 10th President of the country.
    Ram nath Govind back then, Kovind opposed the commission’s report saying, "Including Muslims and Christians in the Scheduled Castes category will be unconstitutional." He also added, "Islam and Christianity are alien to the nation," .As defence witness in the 2001 former BJP president Bangaru Laxman bribery case, Kovind deposed that he knew Laxman for the "last 20 years". He deposed that Laxman was a straightforward, simple and honest person, who became president of the BJP.
    Eventually, Laxman was convicted in the case and was arrested, while the BJP distanced itself from the case saying the matter referred to Laxman’s personal conduct.
    The RSS has targeted these Dalit sub-castes for their political agenda. It is the mobilisation and communalisation of ‘the Maha-Dalits’ that the RSS-BJP has planned to counter.
    One can accept that the Ambedkarite movement is struggling to become a significant force as a political alternative to the BJP. However, I think that on the socio-cultural front, this is the only ideological alternative that is combating Hindutva’s cultural fascism in the most potent way. It is the power of Dalit social struggles and its critical ideological engagement that has forced the RSS-BJP to play a Dalit card in mainstream politics.

    ..when KOVIND selected as candidate many questioned who is he..now, how many know Gopalkrishna Gandhi..except he is grandson of Mahatma, what else any one knows..if he did excel in any field but no one knows, then why KOVIND is different from him..personally i think, its a political game against NITISH..its practice in INDIA, selecting based on caste/faith so on for President/VP..if this is only the norms then NDA should choose a Indian Jew..its long due,they should be represented..
