Jaipur, July 13 (IANS): The situation in a Rajasthan village on Thursday continued to be tense after one person was killed in a gunfight between police and a mob.

Curfew was imposed in Sanwarda village of Nagaur district following Wednesday's violence, police said.

Thousands of people from across the state had gathered in the village on Wednesday to protest the killing of a gangster by the police in June. 

"The situation is tense but under control as of now," an official told IANS on telephone from Nagaur.

The mob in Sanwarda on Wednesday night attacked the police with stones, snatched weapons and set a police vehicle ablaze. They injured 33 persons, including 30 policemen, an officer said.

A Superintendent of Police was also injured, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) N.R.K. Reddy told IANS.

"One person who had come from Haryana was killed in the firing (on Wednesday). But who fired at him is a matter of investigation," Reddy said,

The police used tear gas to disperse the mob, he added.

Witnesses said five to six protesters were also injured, but the police have denied this. Three seriously injured policemen were referred to a Jaipur hospital.

The mob demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the death of a gangster, Anandpal Singh, on June 24.

Singh's family claimed he was killed despite his willingness to surrender before the police. They alleged a political conspiracy to eliminate him.

Internet services were suspended in the area on Wednesday night. On Thursday, the internet ban was extended in nearby Churu and Sikar districts, the police said.

"We have arrested over 100 persons since yesterday (Wednesday)," a police official said.
