China issues yellow alert for rainstorms

Beijing, Jul 20 (IANS): China on Thursday issued a yellow alert for rainstorms as heavy showers were expected over the next 24 hours.

From Thursday to Friday, heavy rains were expected in parts of Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Guangdong and Yunnan, Xinhua news agency quoted the National Meteorological Centre (NMC) as saying.

Precipitation will reach up to 180 mm in Jilin, Heilongjiang and Liaoning, and some of these areas may also see thunderstorms and gales, said the NMC.

The centre warned local authorities to reduce outdoor activities and take precautions against strong winds, flooding and geological disasters.

China has a four-tier colour-coded weather warning system, with red the most severe, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
