Youth dies in Army firing in Kashmir, police case filed

Srinagar, July 21 (IANS): A young man was shot dead on Friday by the Army during a stone-pelting protest in Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam district, leading to a police case against the Army unit, officials said.

Tanveer Ahmad Pala was hit by a bullet when Rashtriya Rifles attempted to disperse a mob in Beerwah town, police sources said. Pala was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Another youth was injured in the incident but doctors said his condition was stable.

Police said a First Information Report (FIR) had been filed against the Army unit over Pala's death.

The police said a foot patrol of the counter-insurgency unit was returning to its camp when some miscreants threw stones at them.

"Someone among the miscreants also hurled a firecracker at the soldiers. Because of the bang, the soldiers thought a grenade had been hurled and they retaliated," a police officer said.
