Mangalore, May 2: It was a labourers' day observance with a difference. Thanks to the strict model code of conduct in view of the forthcoming elections, May Day was observed on Thursday May 1 without a single red flag.

Labourers dressed in red and white took a procession from Lady Hill to Urwa Grounds here. In accordance with the election code of conduct, they could not carry placards, banners or flags which all these years had marked their observance of May Day.

Labourers belonging to various trade associations including All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) took part in the rally. After the rally, a convention was held by AITUC in which trade union leaders expressed their disappointment over not being allowed to carry flags.

The leaders added in a defiant tone that though they could not carry flags or placards, nobody could take away their fundamental rights and expressed their happiness over the support shown by women labourers who came dressed in red and white sarees and also took part in the rally.

Speaking on the occasion veteran communist leader B V Kakkilaya urged the labourers to raise their voice against injustice and demand their rights. The capitalists should share part of their profits with the labourers, he demanded.

The leaders placed other demands too like probe in to the wealth accumulated by election candidates and cause for inflation.
