Puttur, May 3: In a major development, BJP expelled five of its party workers including former MLA and independent candidate for the forthcoming elections Shakuntala Shetty.
Those expelled are Shakuntala Shetty, Abbas Ali Bohra, Banari Gopalkrishna Bhat of Puttur, Vishwanath Rai and Shivaraj Tangadagi. They have been expelled from the party's primary membership for six years in view of the anti-party stance taken by them.
Shakuntala Shetty, who had been the favourite for Puttur ticket before being actually denied it, was miffed with the BJP for having chosen Mallika Prasad over her. This created ripples between the BJP and its allies who supported Shankunatala Shetty. Shetty then decided to contest as an independent candidate, a move which has proved too costly for her and resulted in her expulsion from BJP.
Abbas Ali Bohra, who was forced to contest from Chennapatna is instead standing as an independent candidate from Mandya.
