M'lore: Dr Sujatha Suicide Case - DSS Demands Arrest of Culprits

Mangalore, May 5: The DK district unite of Karnataka Dalit Sangharsha Samithi (DSS) has urged the authority to arrest the seven alleged persons behind the reported suicide of  a Mangalore University lecture Dr Sujatha, who hailed from Scheduled Caste family.

Samithi's district convenor Girish Kumar U K alleged that Prof K M Kaveriappa, vice-chancellor of Mangalore University, Prof Rashid Ahamad, HoD of Applied Botany, Prof Abhaya Kumar HoD of Kannada, Dr Ramachandra, lecturer in applied botany, Dr A M Khan, lecturer in electronics, Dr Krishnappa,a faculty of Kuvempu University and Dr K Sundar Naik, former registrar of Mangalore University had indulged in sexual harassment, victimization, negligence and assisting sexual abuse which prompted Dr Sujatha to end her life.

He said that Dr Sujatha had written many a time to the registrar, vice-chancellor, controller of examinations, coordinator for grievance cell for SC/ST and women's cell regarding the alleged sexual harrassment by the HoD of applied botany Prof Rashid Ahamad, but nothing was done to redress her grievances.

He also said that the she had maintained a dairy in which she had penned down all the bad experiences she had in the department as a lecturer.

J V Amar, husband of Dr Sujatha and others were present at the press conference.
